I can't speak from experience (I have win2k), but I believe turning off
indexing for your sierra\gpl\ folder should fix this.

Try a Google groups search for gpl ctd. on this newsgroup.
(ctd=crash to desktop)

Have you added any custom cars?  I have heard of some cars having a bad
file or two that messes up when the sim tries to load it.  Go back to
default install and see if it still happens.

Are you trying to run it on a NTFS partition? Tried it on FAT32?

why would GPL kick me back to desktop?

by Chris H » Tue, 17 Sep 2002 01:39:04

I found just the opposite.  GPL won't run on my Windows XP Pro (NTFS) unless
I have Indexing turned on.  GPL should run on either NTFS or FAT32 under XP.
I've had it on both.  As for dumping back to the desktop, I'd check the
memory.  If you're not running matching RAM sticks, XP will do some weird
things under stress.  If you've got 256 and 128 in there as a combo to 384
MB, pull the 128 and see if that helps.

I had the same problem and tried to follow the suggestions I
found on the internet. Turning indexing on and off didn't change
anything, and I did not have a non NTFS partition to put GPL
on.

A last desperate attempt then brought a solution: I simply
copied my GPL folder (d:\games\sierra\gpl) to C:\GPL. Now
it works like a charm.

Maybe it will work for you, too.

Good luck!
Oliver

I just upgraded to an XP2200 and now my gpl won't work! I tried moving it to
C:\GPL but that didn't work either. Guess I'll have to give up on GPL... :(

GPL works just fine on any speed cpu using teh patches at www.papy.com, and it runs on Win2k or XP
as well.  You have to run disk indexing, and if you run on-line using winVROC, you have to rename
riched20.dll to eliminate the error message you get when starting vroc.

somebody hold my hand and tell me how to turn it on if im wrong.

everyone says it will run but ive installed gpl multiple times with the
patches, d3d,cpufix,1.2 and still no joy.
