When In D3D applications after playing for a few minutes, usually around 2
to 5, the application will bail back to the desktop.
My System:
Hardware,
AMD K7-950mhz
256 Meg of pc133 ram
Asus K7v motherboard with 1007 bios
GF2 GTS 64 Meg.
Philips Acoustic Edge sound card.
Software Drivers
Via 4:1 drivers 4.31 (originally had 4.28)
Video drivers 6.50, 7.52, 12.40
OS =Win Me
Direct X 7.1, DX 8.0, DX 8.0a
300w power supply
Kenwood 72x CD ROM
Zip drive
Something I have noticed but not sure if it is a cause or effect:
I have noticed is that according to NASCAR Heat's benchmark page my fill
rates are taking a major dive. My frame rates fall accordingly so I do
believe the values are correct.
Last configuration when everything was ok.
Win98se, Via 4.28 4in1 driver, 7.52 video driver, Direct X 7.1
What I'm trying to get to run:
Win ME, Via 4.31, 7.52 or 12.40 video driver, Direct X 8.0a
How/When the problem started:
The problem originally started when I added Direct X 8.0a to my Win98se
machine. I had been running fine with Direct 8.0 for a little while, but I
wasn't checking the fill rates in NASCAR Heat so I'm not sure if I was
losing some of my fill rate or not in DX8.0. The kicking back to the desktop
started after installing Direct X 8.0a in Win 98se.
What I have done to try and get it to work:
Since a format is required to remove DX I decided to upgrade to Win ME.
With a fresh install of ME (which includes DX 7.1, Via 4in1 4.31, and Nvidia
driver 12.40) I originally had NASCAR Heat showing a very high fill rate of
over 800. After installing Leadfoot without DX8.0a my fill started to slide
down to the 200 range, and it is kicking back to the desktop. I actually
never played NASCAR Heat so I don't know if it would have been ok on its own
before installing Leadfoot or not. I really don't feel that it's tied to
Leadfoot because it was doing the same things in Win98se before I had
Leadfoot. I have installed ME many times with all combinations of VIA 4in1
drivers, video drivers, and flavors of DX as well as various software
titles, but nothing seems to help. I do believe that its tied to D3d because
I can play N$ in OpenGL and everything is fine.
Has anybody else seen anything like this? Does anybody have any other ideas?
I really don't want to go back to Win98se and DX7 for various reasons, not
the least of which is the fact I will never be able to go forward. I have
heard about some Geforce cards "underclocking" themselves, but I thought
that was with the cheap OEM versions. Back when I was using the 6.31 driver
it said my default clock rate was 220/366. This is about 10% higher that
what I thought the spec should be for a Geforce2 of 200/333. Other than
this default setting difference the card is not overclocked at all.
This is driving me absolutely nuts trying to figure this out so any help is
greatly appreciated.
