multiplayer GPL kicks back to desktop in Win98

by kero.. » Mon, 21 Oct 2002 21:07:25

This  problem developped  recently when I tried having a LAN
multiplayer race with a friend of mine. As soon as I press the
multiplayer button I get kicked out of GPL onto the desktop.

The latest thing I installed was GEM+  I run GPL (installed on my
e-drive) in WIN98se (system Athlon 900Mhz, Gforce2, Audigy, installed
patch 1.2, discofix,d3dpatch). So,  I hastily created a new install
and that doesn't seem to have this problem. So now I am stuck with 2
GPL installs : 1 on my E-drive and 1 on the C-drive.

My question : what could cause the original install to crash in
multiplayer? Because of GEM+, because my install was not on the
C-drive? Bonus question : are there other people having problems with
the Euro-F2 set from P.Charuest & co? This carset (with that very nice
Matra in it) keeps crashing GPL and WIN98 (some ddhelp file and other
graphics related dll's) everytime I get the car in motion. I applied
the 4-bit carskins but to no avail..

GEM+ is the devil's instrument! You will burn in hellfire for using
it...

  Do you have FSAA enabled?
Nivdia boards don't like FSAA via Vroc.

GEM+ has been known to cause CTDs (Crash To Desktop) in GPL multiplayer
after engine swapping. You can easily check for this by copying the .exe
from the fresh install over the E: drive intallation. If this cures the
problem then the culprit was indeed GEM+.

Running GPL on a drive other than C: is no problem in Win98 AFAIK. I
gathered it only needs to be on C: if you use NTFS (WinNT/2000/XP Pro file
system).

F2 carsets.... out of my league, sorry.

I tried a couple of things :
copying the fresh install exe in the original install directory did
not solve the problem. So it probably is not GEM+ (and I'll have to
postpone that ritual burning..)
But it is interesting to know that these tools can cause crashes to
desktops. Untill recently I installed carsets and switched tracks 'by
hand' (renaming and moving folders and files around) This probably is
the safest method if you want to keep your exe and ini's clean.
So I am now starting to think that it is one or other car that I am
using that sets off the crashes.

There's also a thing about a particular set of driver arms and a new fancy
windshield for Bruce's Lotus. I've never used either or know where to find
them, just floating ideas.

Procedure should be pretty simple... keep installing add-ons one by one
until the crashes re-occur. Then you're sure to find the culprit.

Ok, that explains why it worked fine the last time I installed it on XP.  I
only have one partition this time..

I'm running it on my D drive with NTFS no problem.

It _may_ be more accurate to say that it should be installed on the
%systemroot% partition instead of "The C Drive".

When I boot my *** XP partition it is the D drive.

Thanks for the correction, Larry. Hardly any NT/2000/XP Pro experience here
and going from memory (proven to be wildly inaccurate at times).

No biggie.  There is always confusion from this, and Microsoft doesn't help
matters.

For example, you have what's called the "Boot" partition and you have what's
called the "System" partition.

Most people seem to think the "Boot" partition is the partition that has the
NTLoader. boot.ini, etc... files on it and the "System" partition" is the
partition with the Windows (or %SystemRoot%) directory.

Nope.  It's the other way around.

The Boot partition is the partion that's %systemroot% and the System
Partition (always the C drive in all Hard Drive circumstances) is the System
Partition.

Gee, I guess I did learn something when I became an MCP :)
