GPL: Rendition plus Voodoo 2...any suggestions?

by Luis and Maribel Sot » Fri, 16 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi, there,

I mainly use my 3dfx card (Pure 3d, Voodoo1) for games, but GPL is so
awesome that I'm considering upgrading my system.  I'm currently running a
PII 266 on an ASUS P2L97 MB, 64MB SDRAM, and a Viper 330 AGP as a primary
card, with the Canopus as the secondary.  I run the game fully from my 4.2GB
SCSI HD.  What I'm considering is getting a voodoo2 as a secondary, and a
Rendition-based AGP card as a primary.  I'm also considering getting a
333mhz PII processor.

Has anyone had any experience with similar equipment?  Any info, opinions,
thoughts, etc., are welcome.

Many thanks,
L.S.

GPL will respond well to a cpu upgrade. I'm running a 333 clocked to 416
with a Voodoo 2 - latest reference drivers. This is an excellent
combination. I'm about to test the same with an sli setup and I'll report
back to this NG on how much difference it makes. FYI, I'm using a Gigabyte
BX m/board (GA-6BXC) at 83Mhz with standard 10ns SDRAM. In order to run at
83Mhz you will almost certainly need to change the CAS latency from auto to
3. I have no experience with the rendition card (so far impossible to
locate!) but hearesay has it that it will cause no problems for the Voodoo
2. However, you should consider whether you actually need the Voodoo 2 if
you are buying a rendition and particularly if you don't like the idea of
clocking your CPU. . The consensus seems to be that up to a PII 300 and a
GPL resolution of 800x600 the latest rendition-based cards are actually
faster than the Voodoo 2s. There are good reasons for this which have been
gone into elsewhere. Once you go to faster CPUs and higher resolutions the
advantage swings to the Voodoo.

I'm using a Diamond Stealth 2 s220(which can be bought for $10 after
rebate) and a Celeron 266 oc'ed to 400 and GPL with 19 opponents is
very smooth. Even at start frame rate never dropped below 22fps, most
of the time it's over 30fps.

Rendition at the present time can't take advantage of AGP, there are AGP
rendition cards however but the PCI version performance should be very
similar if not the same.  I would advise only going rendition AGP if u
are thinking of going to 2 Voodoo cards in SLI mode.
I currently use the stealth II s220 and am starting to find support for
the rednition chipset dwindling.  There maybe better options....
