GPL with 1.1 patch - easier to drive?

by Ro » Sun, 11 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Gents,

Recently acquired a FF wheel (Wingman Formula Force) in the light of
some real dandy sims coming soon.

GPL as groundbreaking as it is could never totally hook me. I was able
to get a 1.08 at Watkins Glen but was never completely consistant.
Physics are darn excellent, but I guess I wasn't dedicated enough to
be able to consistantly lay down a good race. Unfortunately, this took
away my enjoyment of this game when I would come in hot to a corner,
apply brakes and end up spinning sideways off the track.

Does the patch provide any simplified modes besides GP2 & 3
categories? They do give me more enjoyment than battling with a GP1
car, however, I find that I get annoyed racing at places like Monza
wishing I could hoon it down the straights.. ;)

Any opinions appreciated.

Cheers,
Rod.

Yes - the force feedback support. It is way better than anything
previously attempted in PC sims, and it really does make the car
easier to control. You have to try it to believe it.

The default car settings are supposed to be more
"beginner-friendly".

If you haven't already, try some of Alison Hine's Cooper setups
(you can change the filename extension and use them on the car of your
choice).

People say 1.1 is easier to feel with FF (versus just see) what the
car is doing.

Soon GPal will be out which make tweaking the AI drop-dead easy.

In other words, incremental improvements, but no full-blown "arcade
mode".

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
