Well.. my system just doesn't like the Intergraph Reactor 3d board,
but what about the Screamer 3d.. Mistique or Creative Laps 3d blaster
(PCI) board??  Any comments are greatly appreciated!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Don, I made the system myself... the motherboard is a Intel FX Chip
Set (256 cache) (J-656C).  I've got a Intel Pentium 150 cpu.. 24 megs
of memory.  3 hard drives (all Western Digital) and a quad speed hard
drive.  I've got a Practical Periferals 28.8 fax modem, sound blaster
16 sound card.. ch3 game card.

The Canopus TOTAL 3D board is now the tops rendition board.  I bmarked
it vs. the Reactor which I also own (its going to my kids pC) and it is
a full _31%_ faster than Reactor.  It is somewhat faster than Sierra's
card, but not as big a diff as Reactor.  Just make sure your mboard
supports dma or buy a new mboard that does.  antia-aliased 640x480 N2 at
30+ fps is gorgeous.

It is faster mainly because of the optimized drivers.  The hardware
differences should have a minimal effect (faster RAMDAC and 5 or 10ns
faster RAM).  I've been out of town for the past week, so care to tell
me how your running N2 with anti-aliasing?  I checked with Intergraph,
Rendition, and Sierra and could not find a patch.

How is it 31% faster?

Verite 1000 chip still?
Better bios?
Better Drivers?
Faster clock?
Mystery?

Hey Charlie, have you tried removing EVERY other board from your
computer?  I had a time getting my REACTOR to work in my machine.  It
turned out that I had another board using the same IRQ that the
REACTOR board was using from the factory.  The reactor board does not
come with any DOS utility to view or set the board settings.  It
TOTALLY delends on Windows'95 to make these changes.

It worries me.  Do any of the other Verite 1000 based boards come with
a utility that can be used to view or set the on board plug and play
settings?

In my case, once I knew that my Aztech brand sound board was
preventing my Intergraph Reactor from operating, I simply changed the
IRQ settings on the Aztech board.  This allowed the machine to boot so
that Windows'95 could do it's thing.

It has a faster RAMDAC and slightly faster EDO RAM (about 5ns faster
than the Reactor's RAM).  These really are not too significant, as it
is the optimized drivers that account for most of the speed increase.

The Reactor has a 135mhz RAMDAC, and the Canopus no longer has their
speed posted on their specs page (I seem to remember it was like 170mhz
or something).  The Total3D uses 40ns RAM, while the Reactor has 45ns
or 50ns RAM (I'm not sure which).

I haven't heard of renedit, are you talking about renutil?

But, Eric, this guy (Leigh Anderson) is claiming a 31% speed
increase in VQuake, ie: *Verite 3D mode*.  That's based on the
hardware and the BIOS, not the Windows drivers.  I'm skeptical, but
he's insistent.  ;)

Of course, he also says NASCAR2 has anti-aliasing...

Pick one or more: Model Rockets (competition-NERCB) / PCs (even Atari!) /
Papyrus ICR-ICR2-NCR / Who needs a life when you have multiple non-lives?

He also said it was faster than the Sierra card, but not nearly as
large a difference as the Reactor.  In non-Win95 related stuff (DOS
games) the Reactor and Sierra card are identical in performance (give
or take a fps).
