The point I was eluding to was that there is a strong racing sim
community as a whole. DGF's apparent determination to split it into a
"GPL Community" and the rest maybe to his loss.

He certainly can play at the foul mouthed bigot (very well!), yet those
that have raced with him on Rascar may have seen a different side. So I
take his rants on RAS with the proverbial pinch of salt. Though in
isolation I'd agree with your interpretation of the latest :)

Cheers

Thanks for the tip! I should have read all the documentation thoroughly of
course, I was rushing to get out on track ;-)

I'll give GTR and F1 a good going over to see what I can get out of them
both, and hopefully F1 may grow on me in time. My original post was a first
impression from less than a day's experience. With a sim this complex it'll
take time to appreciate all of it, but the GTR mod just felt right straight
out of the box. Maybe it's the setups.

Very Good review Malc, not least becuase it matchs my own reactions to
F1-2002 and to the GTR mod. Speaking as a former GPL'er the first didn't do
much for me but the second has really got my attention these days. Great
mod.

As for DGF don't mind him; after all every village has its village idiot.
Every couple of months I dump my old blocked senders list as stale and start
it again. DGF is usually one of the first to make it back on to the list and
then the newsgroup is back to being interesting again.

Thanks for the interesting review

I agree. It's not a competition for the 'best' sim, it's perfectly possible
to have any number installed and enjoy them all, but every driver will
always have their favourite.

I only really block spammers but I have a '***' rule and a 'good guy' rule.
They're pretty dynamic, but DGF is the only one whose been in both at one
point or another ;-) He's still in the 'good guy' list at the moment, I
appreciate his opinions are from the heart.

Thanks.

My theory is that DGF has some allergic reaction to the word GPL :-)

Yeh, when RAS is quiet just chuck in a post with "GPL" or "Aussie V8s" -
sure to get a response :)

Hehehe... I know the feeling.

Here's another power tip: search the group for posts on F1 2k2 and GTR2002
FF tweaking by Haqsau.

Oh, and BTW: you are using the "super high" physics rate (half-rate setting
in your .PLR file), I take it?

Definately, Doug's physics and setups for the mod are it's main selling
point, but I find the AI much improved over the original game as well.

"The Black Cat =^..^="
Another thing to consider Paul are tires.  I have pretty much stuck with
one car.  But when the new Force One Viper was released I tried it.  My lap
times with the same setups were almost 3 seconds slower at Magny Cours.  I
spent about an hour on the Force one and exited the online session and came
back with my 'regular' ART Viper.  Immeadiately I was back down near my PB
times and then whoosh...2 more seconds below that.   The only difference?
The Force One had Michelin tires and the ART had Pirelli's.   Doug commented
on each tire brand, I don't remember the specifics(it was in the physics
readme)  But for me at least, I have faaaar more confidence in a Pirelli
tire now than I do a Michelin.(which was constantly squeeling)
My driving style(or lack thereof) probably has something to do with the
difference in how each tire behaved.

Exactly.  GPL may have its inadequacies, but of late I have become
pretty convinced that you don't have to drive it like an arcade game to
be fast, and in either case it is still whopping good fun.  From now on
I will only play racing games that have the letter "G" in them.  ;o)

While GTR's physics may not be fully on par with N2k2, the feeling of 'being
there', the immersion factor you get from this mod is excellent, because the
GTR team adressed other important aspects like sound adequately as well.
Anyone tried the Ferrari 512 yet, btw? :-)

I don't drive much, but GTR2002 gets the bear share of that time :-)

Of course, David, it's not GPL ;-)

Hey not even, moi? ;)

Seriously, I also thought the same about F1-2002.  It's just that, modern F1
doesn't give me the e***ment that more "normal" racecars do.  I think only
Crammond ever game me with GP2 the sensation of driving a beast.  Every
other F1 title seems sterile.

We like cars that are less perfect.

We like cars that want to take control over us.

We like it when the rear wants to turn around and start driving up front!

We don't like cookie-cutter tracks or cars.

Shouldn't you be racing RC3 instead of F1-2002 David ?    Is RC3 a complete,
flop?

Oh you're right, still waiting for the F1RC patch eh? ;)
