Voodoo3 or not?

by Video Bo » Fri, 14 May 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,
     I'm currently running a PII350 w 128 megs of ram w/ 2-8 meg voodoo
2 cards.  My question is this:  Is it worth my while to upgrade to a
Voodoo3 2000?  I'd like the V3 3000, but the budget will only allow for
the 2000 model. :-(  Any opinions are greatly appreciated! :-)
             Thanks!

Well, you could read the dozens of posts from the past couple of weeks here
at ras but I'll save you the time. No.

From what I understand, the Voodoo3 2000 is not quite as fast a the 2
SLI Voodoo2 that you have. The Voodoo3 3000 is about equal. The
Voodoo3 3500 slightly better. I bought my Voodoo3 3000 for $137 which
is a pretty nice deal I think. Check out www.pricewatch.com for
comparisons of the best prices on the internet.

Good luck.

Well, you won't be disappointed by the performance, that's for sure, but one
thing that is not mentioned too much is how much better the V3 looks because you
dont have to siphon your 2D card through it before it gets to your monitor.
When you look at a monitor day in and day out, it is easy to forget how much
fuzzier it got with the addition of the VooDoo card(s).  I recently got a
V3/2000 PCI and yanked my VooDoo2 12 meg / ATI AIWPro combo.  The difference in
picture quality in daily use was immediately apparent and the card also
completely whoops the VooDoo 2.

In other news, I just got a V3/3000 AGP and I will be putting it in tomorrow and
throwing the old V3/2000 PCI in my spouses' computer.  SHould be even better!

Get a V3 2000 and overclock it to be a 3000.

I don't think so, they are to close in their performance to invest
that money..
Beside this your PII 350 could then be the slowest part -> no better
performance.
