After the race, a somewhat irate Tony commented on a media person who said
that his 1100 mile attempt was 'dangerous'...

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

IMHO...that article was written by a complete idiot.  I've driven 1100 miles in a day
(Albuquerque, NM to St. Louis, Mo) and with less time to sit down and 'relax' as Tony
gets in his helicopter rides and plane flight.  And I certainly wasn't a danger to others
on the roadways or so tired I couldn't see straight.  This guy probably gets overcome
with exhaustion driving to the grocery store...

Cheers!

Do not compare apples to oranges

There is a HUGE difference between driving 1100 miles in a passanger car
compared to race cars going 200mph.

Today during the Indy 500 they were talking about how one of the drives (I
forget which one) had a monitor strapped to him during the race so they
could monitor his heart beats and his breathing.

They said that during green flag driving, his heart was up to about 130
beats per minute and his breathing was at 35.  They then commented how this
was the same level that a marathon runner reaches.  Not to mention that at
200mph, everytime you move it feels like your body is 3x its normal weight
and it is hard just to move your head.

BS. That is in no way related to speed. When you fly across the Atlantic on
Concorde at Mach 2 you won't feel any different to on the subway at 30mph.

No question the drivers in the Indy500 are subject to a serious amount of
lateral accellerationin the turns, but they're not subjected to 3G all the
way 'round and do have extensive head support.

I can see where the authors of these articles are coming from.
Aside from the G's making you physically tired, you need to stay
mentally sharp. All of those hours (not miles) in the***pit could
really dull that mental edge, and a personal trainer isn't helping
that.

This is in hindsight of the races, and thankfully nothing happened,
but I still think it was a bad idea.

Baloney.   The physical aspects may be different (and not to the extent that you
were talking about, you don't constantly have G-forces, only in the corners), but
the mental aspects are the same.  At least they *should* be...if you are not paying
attention 100% of the time when you are driving, then I certainly want to give you
a wide berth.

Tony Stewart also got some time to sit down and 'relax' a bit, the 1 1/2 hours
on the two helicopter flights and the plane flight.  I didn't get that luxury, nor did
I stop except for gas...and a quick stop for someone ELSE who fell asleep at
the wheel and ran off the road.

Tony also spent less time doing the distance (thankfully, for all the state troopers
in TX, OK and MO would've had a field day), he did 6 1/2 hours driving, it took
me 16 hours.

Cheers!

IMHO...you're wrong.  Look at the evidence.

Tony spun on lap 2 because he was tired and not used to the stock car.
THANK GOD he was dead last or he woulda taken the field with him.

The guy is a menace.

Which just goes to show that the reporter knew nothing, and I mean NOTHING
about exercise physiology.

130 bpm is the level of moderate exercise that even your granny could
sustain indefinately.

And when I say indefinately I mean indefinately. She would only have to stop
when due to lack of sleep, not from the stress of the exercise.
Ultramarathoners routinely maintain heart rates above this level for 2 and 3
days at a time, without sleep.

I would also point to Le Mans where drivers have taken 4 hour stints, a 4
hour break, and another 4 hour stint around the clock for decades. Pierre
Levegh did it solo once. It took until the 23rd hour before he suffered any
ill effects on his driving.

LOL, you seriously think that driving a race car is the same as driving a
passanger car mentally? LOL

No offense, but that is a classic..

If you think toodling down the interstate at 60mph takes 100%
of your mental abilities, you must have an IQ of much less than 30.

I can see you have zero hours seat time in a single seater.
Go take a learn to race course somewhere and then talk about
something you have some knowledge about.

If you did have some seat time (I do) you would know that braking
and being tossed from side to side at over 2G, no cumfy seat,
1 inch off the ground with no suspension (relatively) just aint
the same as the harshest of road cars.

I often travel up to 1000 miles a day on public roads for multiple days and
it doesn't compare at all to five 20 minute race sessions a day in a single seater.

holy frijole,

the leader of the indy race and fastest qualifier lost it and hit the wall
and the whole field was behind him and he had raced mile 0.  should he be
pulled from the track? how many races have you seen where someone spins on
the first lap and takes others with him?  none?  well you haven't watched a
freakin lot of a racing.

tony held on and finished 3rd.  jesus y maria!  he really needs to be taken
out back and shot for endangering others.

u other idjits picking on jan.  read what he said.... tony in car 6 hours,
jan in car 16.  he's talking concentration here.  lets not mention
endurance drivers,  oh no!  let's not mention them.

tony was right, all those whining about how safe it was for him to do this
are indeed "idiots."

I saw quite a few loop all by themselves last night. At least Tony did it
early. Also, the WC drivers had very little seat time due to rain.

Dave, you obviously missed my point completely, as well as have no idea
about me.  First off, I didn't mention the physical aspects...just the mental, which
is what the whole point of the articles were.

Second...I've got plenty of seat time.  Circle track in the UK, drag racing, off-road
racing, and some laps at Lowes.  NOW...

Again, if you do NOT concentrate 100% while driving on public roads, I don't want
to be around you.  I do.  And I guarantee 16 straight hours of concentration is close
enough to simulate Tony's 6 hours of concentration.  I hope that is clear enough?

Cheers!
