Tony Stewart on racing simulations

Yesterday in the pre-race show for the Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen,
the announcers mentioned that this was Tony Stewart's first ever race at
the Glen, and that he had said that he didn't expect to do well.  He was
as surprised as anyone else when he qualified on the second row.

Then they interviewed him.  He said, "I guess all those late nights on
NASCAR 2 on the computer paid off!"  And he gave a big grin.

I am not making this up.  Tony Stewart said that.  I wrote it down on a
pad I had sitting on my coffee table.  I wish I'd been taping it.  I
know damn well Papyrus didn't pay him to say that.

Pretty exciting validation of our little hobby, isn't it?  And he was
talking about NASCAR _2_!

I taped the race, but not the pre-race show, but I did hear Tony say,
clearly, that it was the late nights on the computer playing Nascar 2 that
helped him learn his way around the Glen, and that was .......way cool. He's
for real, and hearing he enjoyed doing the sim thing just made me like him
even more. Go DJ, and Rusty, andTony!

I'm curious. I taped the race (on TSN) last night and will watch it to
see if he makes the comment. Amazing, isn't it?

You may already know this but Dale Earnhardt Jr. - as well as members of his
crew - frequently race N2 on TEN.  He's just "one of the gang".  His sig says
"Race me clean and I'll race you clean..."

Very cool if you ask me :)

Thats not how Dale Jr raced people when he first joined TEN.

He intentionally wrecked me at Dega in one of his early races on TEN.

After the race he said he didn't like my line.

I think what they were trying to say is that the game helps them learn the tracks. I believe they were talented before the simulation ever came out. Every little bit helps.

If Tony Stewart thinks driving Nascar 2 will make him a better driver,
someone needs to tell him to get a life!  Same goes for Dale Jr.,
Jacques Villanueve, and all those other kooks.  It's not reality,
  it's only a game :)

I wonder if he went to the trouble to download his own paintscheme from the
net, or maybe drop Skinner's skill numbers down to say, oh, 50.  :)

Seriously, how else are you going to learn road courses these days?  The man
had less than 30 minutes of practice at Watkins Glen in his LIFE when he
took the green on Sunday!!!

Of course he was, Mike.  I've argued the same thing many
times on this news group.  I said that in the most sarcastic
text I could manage :)

Does anyone still race on TEN?

I think what they were trying to say is that the game helps them learn the tracks. I believe they were talented before the simulation ever came out. Every little bit helps.

Oh yeah?  Well, Jeff Gordon has a Daytona USA machine at home and that helped
him win at Buster Brown's (D&B) during the California 500 weekend!

From TV Guide 17-23 July:

"Competitive edge: An hour over video games per night.  'Accidents I
couldn't avoid before, suddenly I was avoiding.  It was all because of the
quick hand-eye coordination I'd learned.'"  -Tony Stewart

He made those comments on the NASCAR 2Day preview show, so you probably
won't see it in the race broadcast.

Some of the F3000 drivers admit to downloading the updated GP2 tracks on their
schedule for a bit of practice - and it really can help them considering they
only get 45 minutes to qualify and NO time to pre-race practice!

Rob Swindells
3rd equal in Goldline Bearing FFord Championship (18 Points);
9 points behind Championship Leader (as of round 4 of 6)
