LWFF USB and Nascar2?

LWFF USB and Nascar2?

by Brett C. Camma » Wed, 10 Jan 2001 10:58:43

I gave a bargain bin copy of Nascar2 to a relative for Christmas along
with a PC, so I reinstalled my copy on the off chance he might enjoy a
race sometime.

Well, on my machine Nascar2.Exe  errors out after the soundcard is
identified,  The screen clears and an error debug message is
displayed.

Is it because it's a DOS game and I'm using a digital controller?
I've not located any references to this sort of thing yet on the
Internet, so I figured someone here might have a thought about it.

I'm running Windows98 SE on a Celeron 400, 64 megs RAM, Voodoo2 (but
can't even get to the point where that could be selected), etc.

Runs GPL, SCGT, and N3 just fine.  Any thoughts, clues, vague
recollections or wild guesses welcomed.  I've pretty much hit the wall
here...

If you have N3 why even bother with N2?  Other than nostalgia, what
benefit will you derive from it?  The only way to get your wheel working
with it would be to run  n2 in a window...I don't think it will like that.
Tell your relative to upgrade as well...trying to get dos programs to work
with win98 is more hassle than it's worth....
(I have this old old old copy of Ultima 7 I've been meaning to
finish...ain't gonna happen...)

I have had no trouble running DOS programs in Win 98 or ME.  The only thing
is my MS Precision Pro and Racing Wheel don't work with them.

Nascar 2 will in no way work with a digital controller. It is a
feature.

LWFF USB and Nascar2?

I believe I covered that in my explanitory sentence.  They couldn't
afford a computer and I scored a nice HP Vectra 166 Pentium tower for
$150.00 because that's all *I* could afford to give them.  It can run
N2, but I doubt if N3 would be enjoyable on it.  Also, if they
couldn't afford a computer, they couldn't afford N3.   I might be able
to afford to give them a copy, but with N4 in the offing, I doubt if
it would be a prudent purchase as the price should fall precipitously
soon.

So, I installed N2 and sent a bargain bin copy of the CD so they could
race with me and have some fun.

Now that you have the situation in complete context, can you perhaps
see where I am coming from?

Not everyone can lavish money on their hobbies.  N2 still has fine
entertainment value for a racing fan who's on a budget and new to
computers.  I gave 'em my old Nascar Pro wheel, maybe I'll plug in my
old Logi stick and see if it works with that.

that is about the only way to get it working.  You'll need something that
is NON digital since all that came after N2 was coded.  Rember it was
windows 3.1 back in those days.(there was a reason games were run in
dos...:>  )
You also may have sound problems.  Plug and Play puts soundcard resources in
any available irq, which for older games is waaaaay beyond their scope.
If you can, go to system/device manager and change the resources of your
sound card so they match up with older dos irq's...  5,3,1 were the old
Soundblaster standards...(it's been so long I forgot what each means...5 is
the irq, 3 is.....and 1 is the dma channel I think....)  :>   7 for an irq
is also do-able with most older dos programs.  Good luck

Sorry to say, but N2 will not work with Digital Controllers at all.

This was probably the most complained about problem when NROS was online.

It was specifically because of online game play at the time, but
a feature none the less :-)

Acutally it was Windows 95B then, or at worst Windows 3.11, no one ran 3.1
in 96.

I ran DOS 5.0/Win3.1 last *summer*.  Was since '92.
