The RockFire USB Joystick to USB adapter update.

by Nigel Nichol » Fri, 28 Jun 2002 02:41:01

Hi folks

Last week I posted a message about the Rockfire USB adapter to get other
opinions before I bought one. I went ahead a got one and I must say it is
worth it.
I tested the unit using both low grade and two brands of high grade pots and
in all cases the calibration in Windows is rock solid.  Change the
controller back to the standard windows via the games ports and all type of
pots had the jitters.
The onlt thing I had to do was to change the steering pot froma 50k ohm to a
100 k ohm to get a smoother movement as the Rockfire tends to have notchy
movement with the lower pots.

The Rockfire may even speed the game up a little as it is my understanding
that the standard games ports only runs at 8 mhz and apparently the PC's CPU
has to go into a wait state as it waits for the games port to pass the
signal.  Maybe the Rockfire copes better with today speed CPU.
I will do more tests to confirm my idea.

Anyway get the Rockfire, its worth it.
Discounted price at the moment at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Got mine in 5 days from the US to New Zealand.

You feel with the 100 k pot you get smoother motion? I have the 50k in my
TSW. The steering was "stepped" if you will. Looks like I need to change
those pots.

Hi David

Yes the 100k pot are smoother than the 50k.   There are about 25 steps with
the 50's and about 50 with the 100k's.  Some have said that 250k are
required but I don't know about that yet. I tried a 500k but the calibration
wouldn't move at all.

A race in GPL in Vroc proved very good as I felt the steering with the 100'k
very smoother and without the jitters I often experienced with the games
port.

Thanks Nigel...Thomas Enterprises now makes a converter "pass through" box
that allows the the 50k's to be used with an usb converter. I wonder if this
is a good solution?

The RockFire USB Joystick to USB adapter update.

I guess the 100k pots can be used for steering since it probably uses most
of
the pot range (270 degrees).
For pedals (I have not seen the inside of TSW pedals, so they may be
different),
normally the pot is rotated about 90 degrees or less. This means the range
from
lower to upper value is about 1/3 of what it is for a wheel.

If a 250k pot works for pedals, a 100k pot should work ok for a wheel.

I Don't kow how the Rockfire works but I'm guessing that it converts the
analogue signal from the controller into digital before it passes it onto
the USB port.
Anybody know if that it correct

I couldn't find the pass through box you mentioned on the TSW site.  Have
you got a URL please

The RockFire USB Joystick to USB adapter update.

By the way.  I must mention that I cannot get the Rockfire to work well in
EA's F12001.  In fact I can't get a dual axis controller to work in F1 2001.
I can run a single axis unit via the games ports but only as  "Custom"
setup.
And now that you have brought up F1 2001's "custom" controller setup,, .....
how or where do you calibrate it or does EA's asume all controllers are
equal.  ????

Advice to other racing sim designers.  Ring Papyrus and ask how to make
setting up a controller simple and effective, not to mention making it user
configurable no matter if you use DirectX   or Generic . Don't be ashamed,
just ask.

Flame away, it's winter here, I could do with warming up.
