TSW2 & Rockfire USB adapter

TSW2 & Rockfire USB adapter

by Joel A. Willstei » Sun, 12 Jan 2003 12:25:32

      I'm using a TSW2 steering wheel/split axis with DK pots.  I have
always used the game port on all my SoundBlaster sound cards, but since I
upgraded to a Asus A7V333 motherboard with a AMD 2000+ XP cpu I couldn't get
the sound card to work correctly, so I've been using the built in sound card
on the board.

The Thomas Steering Wheel site lists a Rockfire USB adapter for their
wheels with DK pots that allows you to use a USB port. Installation was a
snap and it works perfectly for 12 laps of racing, then I loose the signal
from the wheel. There is a small patch to fix the loss of signal if your MB
uses a VIA chipset, which the Asus board does.  I installed the patch, but
I'm still loosing the signal after 10-12 laps.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Joel Willstein

Wayne,

After reading all the posts, I couldn't find one that really liked the
adapter. Looks like I'll just go back to the game port for now.

It sounds more like a USB problem than the adapter.  Many people have
similar issues on Via boards with onboard USB.  Perhaps try a PCI USB card.

Also to use the Rockfire adapter with the TSW you either need 250k pots or
their addon adapter to use with 50k pots.

Where did you get your DK Pots?
I'm looking for a supplier. Thomas is a little to high in price.

Thx,

Just for the heck of it, I uninstalled the fix applet and then tried a
17 lap race in GTR 2002. Not a problem. I'll do a few more and see what
happens. But could the fix be just for USB 1.0 and I'm using USB 2.0?

If the problem comes back, then I'll just try the PCI USB card.

Thanks,

ZZ,

Sorry to tell you this, but I get them from Thomas Steering Wheels.  In
the 2 1/2 years I've had my TSW2, I've only changed one pot.

You can buy them via www.digikey.ca. That's the company that makes them I
think. For you Americans, that should be a bargain. The only problem, you
only get the pots, not the wires nor the plugs; some assembly required. They
are 1/3 of the price of what Thomas Enterprise is asking for.

Digikey is not a manufacture but a electronics supply house and a great
source for sure.  Did not know they had DK pots.  www.Digikey.com is the US
site.  Great company, have used them a number of times in.the past.
