GPL - on P200 MMX voodoo 1 or 2?

by Do » Tue, 13 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a P200 MMX  96 MB RAM Hercules Stingray 128/3D

Will GPL run in about 24 fps on this system? Will adding a Voodoo 2
(with my old 2D board) improve framerate?

I'm using a P200 oc/225 64MB with a Voodoo1 (Pure 3D).  Alone, it usually
maxes out the 36 fps with all graphics except clouds on (clouds aren't that
big a hit, but I don't need them).  With a few cars out there, I lower to
cars-only in the mirrors (no other objects), and lower the trackside graphics
to "many" instead of "all".  Framerate stays in the 20's with all 19 AI cars
except at the start.

I suspect the Stingray will take a hit, but I wouldn't let this stop you from
enjoying a terrific, if frustrating, sim.  As to the V2, I can't say.  I
wouldn't upgrade to it just because of this.

Just an addition for some extra data: I have a iP250 (an overclocked

64MB asap) and a Diamond Moster 1 and get about the same performance.

As for the graphics card, I don't know what chipset the Stingray uses.
If it is Rendition 2x00, keep it and don't add a V2 (for GPL purposes,
at least.) If it's a Rendition 1000, a Voodoo 1 or 2 will probably
give some better performance. If the Stingray doesn't have a Rendition
chipset at all, you definitely will need another card.

From what I read here and elsewhere, it seems as if a Voodoo 2 card
uses a lot of processor power to achieve maximum performance.
Processor power is exactly what we Pentium non-II users don't have in
excess. :) A cheap Voodoo 1 would probably be a better choice for your
current system, but you won't want to keep it once you upgrade,
probably.
