With the global hype system with GPL is there a limit to how fast the AI
will go or will they just keep getting faster and faster as I get faster?
Do they get to a point where their lap times don't improve?

At the moment I am stuck between 10th and 14th position due to the AI
improving when I do.  This isn't a problem though as I just love racing GPL
and I love the challenge and I don't want to slow down the AI because once I
have beaten the AI the challange will be over as On-line racing isn't an
option for me at the bottom of Africa here.  I am just interested to know
how fast the AI will get.

My understanding of GPL is that the AI drive at a % of your speed, as
determined by the global hype settings. AFAIK there is no minimum
or maximum speed or laptime they can achieve, if you keep getting
faster, so will they relative to your laptimes as set in the global
hype.

I would say, based on posts where the AI has been lapping at speeds we
can only dream of because of clock smashes, that the AI can eventually
drive quicker than any of us.

So unless you reinstall or start a new player you will never beat the AI
with Global Hype working? As it will always be that much faster than your
best laps.

It is possible to edit the AI to slow them down or speed them up. I know
they can go pretty fast. I have seen the Lotus at over 230mph (after
editing)

So if you're a 10th place driver, andthe AI improves WITH you, you'll STILL be
a 10th place driver?  Unless you make a DRASTIC improvement...?

I don't agree. What was true with 1.0 is no longer true in 1.2. The AI are
now randomly programmed to make mistakes and they DO! I personally won twice
again the AI on differenet tracks and different levels and I know lots of
people do better.
Laps, laps and more laps ! That's how it pays off !

I agree with Chris, the AI behaves differently in 1.2. If anything
they're not keeping up my speed at monza at them moment.
I have been trying to get the AI to Lap at 1.27.50 downwards. And I
can't even get them to lap at 1.28.00 which is a pain. Plus I am quite
bored with the predictability of their driving. Has anyone seriously
tampered with the AI?I am sure some of you guys out there have got
modified .ini files for the ai which could make things a bit more
competitive on the track.

Mauricio.

I probably didn't explain myself properly? What I meant was, the global
hype stuff ensures a spread of AI driver speeds, but the general
*spread* of AI speeds (not just one or two drivers) will go up as you
improve and your laptimes improve. The overall AI times, laptimes, speed
is based on a % of your own laptimes. IYSWIM?

8-)

The laptimes for the ai are not always the same, they vary and are
random, (but based within limits based on your laptimes) so you can vary
where you are in the field, eg: you will not always be in 10th place or
whatever.

Alison explains it far, far better than me in the help file that came
with one of the early GPL ai_tweak files (which is probably still
available from her website).

There are at least two programs available, ones called AI Tweak by
Alison Hine,  that let you modify the AI drivers level. Search the
Pits or Eagle Womens site.

I actually got taken out of a race at Monza because of an AI mistake.  I was
close behind Chris Amon on the start, and in Curva Grande, he got very loose
and had to fight the car.  He lost a ton of speed and I couldn't get my car
slowed down in time to avoid him and crashed.  What fun!  :)

I have been using these programs and they're quite good, but I have
been unable to get the AI to lap under 1.28 inMonza with those.
I only managed to achieved that by setting the npt_override in
gpl_ai.ini to 0.97777. I started with 0.99999 and decreased the value
until they were lapping at a desired time. But at first when I set the
initial value to 0.99 the AI were going around Monza in 1.12 and they
can even go faster! It's fun to watch J.Clark entering the first Lesmo
at a 140mph and carrying about 160mph through it.
Also the original AI settings seems to make J.Clark by far the more
aggressive driver. Based on that I made a few driver.ini files in
which all the drivers would have the same skill settings as J.Clark,
and it is quite good for off line racing. The only problem is that a
bit of  the randomness is taken out of drivers as you get more and
more used to them and they become more predictable. When that happens
I do another mix of skill settings in the driver.ini. I found many
interesting combinations that make races more fun.
