I have selected mirrors on in the options menu, however they remain off on
the track. I am running a GeForce2 MX 32 mb card, using Nvidia 2183 drivers.
I also don't see a difference when I select the hud off or on.
Would appreciate any tips.

Try windowed mode, much better.
Also in Fullscreen I found enabling Nvidia D3D logo worked, but with 16bit
only.

On those drivers you won't see the cars properly in the rearview mirrors
anyway. But, as the other guy said, set it to windowed mode by opening the
Config.ini in the F12001 root folder and changing the 0 to a 1 on this line,
WINDOWEDMODE=
You should find the game run faster in windowed mode on your card too.
If you want the mirrors to work correctly on your video card then use the
12.90 drivers until EA releases a patch to fix it.

I tried the windowed mode, and the mirrors worked, however on my 19" monitor
it is kind of a let down to run it on such a small window.

<snip>

You can set the game resolution to your desktop resolution and the
top/borders of the game window should be able to be hidden offscreen,
leaving you with an effectively fullscreen game.

First, set the WINDOWEDMODE value in the config file.
Then, re-run the f1-config program and set the res/depth to
match what is on your desktop.  You will even see the "test"
run in a window.

Then run f1 and move the window up so you can only see the
contents and not the border.  Tada - fake fullscreen f1-2001
at decent fps.

and yes - I think EA suck for letting this driver problem get past
QA..it's not like EA or ISI can't get advance copies of drivers
from nvidia - otherwise how come all my other software runs
better with 21.xx drivers?

The 21.xx drivers came out after F1 2001 was released.  It's unrealistic to
suggest that EA/ISI could get 'advance copies' of drivers. The patch should
be any day now.

I don't see why this is unrealistic - EA are a large enough
organisation to be actively developing relationships with
hardware vendors.  It stands to reason that NVidia would
also benefit from such a relationship.  Do you think EA
go down to the local swapmeet to buy cards to test with?

I think release of drivers inside the industry makes sense -
how did we get the choice of WHQL certified drivers if
Microsoft hadn't got 'advance copies" with which to test
against their requirements?

If the rest of the IT industry is any indication, then
relationships between vendors have been an essential part
of developing new software *and* hardware.  HP and
Oracle are a good example in their development of
ServiceGuard clusters that run Oracle Parallel Server.

Even if they don't currently, it is a shift in the games industry
which would benefit us all.

In any case..

How come none of the other games I have purchased
over the past 2 years have run worse with these drivers?

To me it points to exploitation of driver features which
were subject to change. Thus the responsibility of the
developer or publisher to be a*** of possible driver
changes.  As far as I can see, all my software without
the "revolutionary graphics technology" of F1-2001 is
fine.

The days of shortcutting the drivers to get to the iron ended
with 3dfx unfortunately.

btw - irrespective of how unreasonable I may seem with my
expectations for multi-million dollar companies to have relationships
with other vendors, it's not unreasonable to have one of
the most common system configurations around (gf2) and
expect your sim to be playable without major tweaking.

I'll give that a try tonight, thanks.

Maximize the window. It will still be a window, but the size of the full
screen.

It does work perfectly well with GF2 its GF3 that is the problem for some
people.  GF2 gets no benefit from 21.xx drivers - they were largely designed
for GF3.  So you should have no problem with the 12.90s say.
When I had the GF2 Ultra, F1 2001 worked perfectly with the 12.90s. Then,
after upgrading to GF3 Ti500 I initally had some problems with F1 2001
only - no other games as you pointed out.  However, now with the 22.80s I

as smooth as you like. The only problem I have is the usual 'cars in
mirrors' one.

I'm using the 21.81a Asus drivers for my GF2 and my mirrors wouldn't work
either. Someone then suggested turning on the NVIDIA logo under the D3D
options and it works. No problems now.

I see 1-10fps difference in several games since using 21.xx
drivers.  This is measured with fraps and varies a lot depending
on the game.  GF2-mx400 with 64mb fwiw.  It may just be
a freak thing but I see slower performance with the 12.xx's

Only F12001 recorded a drop and gained "jerkiness" in
full screen mode when I upgraded drivers.

<snippage>

I agree that *after* tweaking, (switching to older drivers,
changing to window mode etc) F12001 is an excellent game
with very drivable framerates.  I'm just tired of "waiting for
patches".. if I pick up my 300zx tomorrow (which I am) and
the mechanic hasn't used any gaskets on my new manifold
then the job isn't finished and the mechanic doesn't get paid.

I'm not going to pay him, fill the gaps with putty and
happily drive around waiting for him to order the right parts!
..or maybe I should pull the plugs from the left side?  This is
how we react to shoddy workmanship from software houses
and this is why we will continue to be treated this way.

I'll get a timing belt later...how bout we just use this ***
now?

It seems that corporations are following the same desperate
credit driven path of society and thinking money now, quality
later.  Sure it increases bottom lines and "shareholder value"
but it's just another example of abusing the 95% braindead
household consumer electronics market.

WTF?  What setup are you running?  I can't even keep UP with the field, and
that's at 80%, too...  My top speed is only 182-183... :(
