Help! F12001 crashes my system after the patch.

by Luis Sot » Fri, 30 Nov 2001 11:49:18

Hi guys, I'm looking for some advice...
I had installed the original game and then a no CD patch.  When the patch
finally arrived, I uninstalled the game, reinstalled, and then applied the
patch.  I had to uninstall again, since the uninstall utility did not seem
to remove anything (?!).  After making sure that everything was actuallly
uninstalled, I installed it again and then applied the patch.
The game runs nice enough for me, but it crashes a lot.  If I'm playing for
anything longer than a few minutes it just crashes and I have to restart.
Sometimes it won't even load (fatal exception).  I'm running at 800x600,
16bit, on a voodoo5 5500 on 2x FSAA.  None of the graphics options are in
red, and I'm usually drive with the nose view.  I've tried it without FSAA
and I get the same issue.  When the games does work, I notice that it
stutters here and there, even though I seem to be getting a very decent
frame rate, but the replays are almost unwatchable.

Here are my specs:

256MB RAM
2 Seagate 20GB ATA100 HDs on a RAID 0 array (onboard Highpoint controller).
Voodoo5 5500 AGP (2x FSAA)
Windows98
DX 8.1 (this is the last thing I tried, upgrading from DX8).
Soundblaster Live value (PCI).
Logitech Wingman Formula Force (the "old" one - combined axis is disabled).

I have not tried it with FRAPS, as I understand that most people are getting
lower frame rates post-patch.  I've enabled force feedback at 100% on full.

Any info you can throw my way  is appreciated!
Thanks,
Luis

We've got similar systems, and I'm encountering the same problem -- However, it
has at least always loaded successfully.  Sometimes, I can get thru a race with
no problem.  Other times, I get kicked out to the desktop, or get a hard lock-up
after a few laps.

I don't have an answer for you, unfortunately.  However, you don't need FRAPS to
check the frame rate anymore.  Control-F will do it for you now.

Just for the record, here's my system:

Abit BH6 mobo
Voodoo 5500 AGP (No FSAA in D3D)
LWFF w/TSW pedals (split-axis)

384 Megs RAM
Windows 98SE
SB Live Value (PCI)
2 Western Digital Hard Drives (nothing special)
DirectX8.0 (4.08.00.0400)

Thanks for the reply, that's exactly what happens to me...
But I get hard lock ups even just by double-clicking on the shortcut!
funny that I just ran several quick races with 21 other cars, without a
hitch.  Then it just locked up on me after a few laps of "testing day."

Windows behavior in general has been erratic, and I always seem to get the
"wait while Windows configures you computer" notice at boot up (when
restarting).  I'm tempted to do a fresh Windows installation or update to
XP.

Help! F12001 crashes my system after the patch.

by Don Burnett » Sat, 01 Dec 2001 12:25:56

I'm getting crashes to desktop too now in F12001 since the update.
I too am running a BH6, Celeron 566 at 850 mhz, win98 with all updates, sb
live card, and a GeForce2 MX v32 mb vid card, dx 8.1, and Nvidia 21.83
drivers.
Mine however may be heat related, as I am getting some lockups in N4 as well
now.

Help! F12001 crashes my system after the patch.

by Doug Hoo » Sun, 02 Dec 2001 14:33:47

I noticed all of you guys are overclocking your cpu's . Have you tried
running them at defaults to see if it makes a difference. I have a T-bird
1.2 that I was running at 1.4 and when I set it back to 1.2  I don't have
nearly as many problems with my systyem as I used to. Might be worth a try.
Good luck.
