Has anyone with a Radeon 8500, noticed a decrease in frame rate in F12K1
since the patch.

Slightly, but I'm guessin' it's got more to do with the implementation of
force-feedback than anything else. My framerate still doesn't drop below
40fps.

I actually saw in increase in performance even with Force feedback enabled.
I am still trying to figure that one out.

I have a question for you Radeon 8500 owners. Are you happy with your
8500's, especially with F1 2001? I ordered a new system with an 8500, I got
the system, but they didn't have 8500's in stock so they loaned me a 7500 in
the mean time, but he told me that should I change my mind and want a
Geforce 3 instead, it would be possible to switch.

Thanks,
Steve

So far I really like the card. I have had it for two months now and really
haven't had a problem with it. It was cheaper then a GF3 TI500, has more
features, and has about the same performance in games. Plus before the F1
patch I was able to play it just fine with no problem unlike the geforce
users.

I have had the 8500 from the release date...actually a bit sooner.  :D
I love the 8500 so far with respect to D3D and Open GL.  The only
thing I am disappointed about is that I don't have Glide support.  I
play a lot of Diablo 2 which runs way better in Glide mode.

Picture quality on the 8500 is better, IMO, than any current NVIDIA
card that I have seen (and we have a LOT of different cards in the
office).

As far as performance goes, it is not the fastest in every benchmark,
but it is faster than the Ti500 in many benchmarks.  I wouldn't give
the award to either card with respect to performance.

Many people have had problems with ATi drivers, but I have had none
with my 8500 thus far.

I have just bought the 8500, trying to decide which drivers I'm going to use
(for Win98SE and XP Pro). Could you tell me which driver version you're
using? (and OS)

Keep in mind that the 7500 card they loaned to you uses ATI's old
R100 processor clocked at a higher speed than the original Radeon.
The 8500 uses the R200 GPU 'graphics processor unit' which is far
superior to the R100. I preordered my 8500 and replaced a 3dfxV5500
with it and have been very happy with the decision.
Sorry I don't have F1 2001 but I do play the following without any
problems whatsoever. GPL, N4, Nascar Heat, Flight Sim, Castle
Wolfenstein which by the way support ATI's smoothvision and looks
just wonderful.
I agree with that both the Ti200/500 and ATI's 8500 are good cards
but it just kind of erks me that so many seem to right off the ATI cards
because of rumors of bad driver support.

Good luck to you,
Dave B

Well, that would depend on what games you play. On the ATI beta XP drivers
FS2002 is really screwed up. But if you use the Omega drivers from here
http://209.145.56.247/ati.htm FS2002 is fixed. I don't have any other games
that have any problem on the R8500. Well, I had to create a custom graphics
profile for IL-2 Sturmovik and in Operation Flashoint I have to turn off W
buffer support. Apart from that everything runs well. Except ATI is still
not tapping the full potential of the R8500 with their drivers and that is
the only reason the GF3 Ti 500 beats it in many games.

I can name three games that the GF3 has issues with on WinXP so their track
record is not perffect either. B17-2, Panzer Elite and Combat Mission:
Beyond Overlord all have issues with GF3 cards on the Nvidia XP drivers. But
I hear their latest drivers fix the issue with B17-2.

Use these drivers ICE. http://209.145.56.247/ati.htm They are not official
drivers, but they are hacked drivers that have been optimized. I have found
them to be the best so far.

The Radeon 8500 was ok, but I have gone back to the GF3.
I can't honestly say that the Radeon does anything better, it looks good, it
plays most games well, albeit some 25fps slower than the GF3, but it is just
not ready for prime time.
For F12001 it is so nice to have the GF3 back, speed and graphics are much
better again !

Sorry Ati....not there yet.

Lucky guy to have 1000.00$ of video cards isn't it?
