F12001 - shifting help

I've been playing F1 2001 with shifting help (just like the real drivers!)
and have found an annoying problem.  Sometimes when nogotiating a slow
corner, the car will downshift from 2nd to 1st and in doing so, send the car
into a *** oversteer (caused by rear wheels locking up).  The problem
really only comes into play with wearing tyres as it becomes more difficult
to take the 2nd gear corners.  The only way around it seems to be to brake
very early and go around the corner at a constant speed which of course is
*very* slow.....any ideas?

For real drivers the auto shifting is only up, I believe, and you have
just found out why.  Keeping it on is not bad when learning a new track
or trying to work out a setup, but you will get better results if you
race with it off.

I have noticed an annoyance with the auto-shifting as well.  When
accelerating out of corners it doesn't seem to upshift until the car
has straightened out.  I find myself prematurely straightening the car
to get it upshift.

It would be nice if you could override the auto-shifting on demand.
So, if I click the upshift button, it would do so but still continue
to auto-shift in other circumstances.

Thanks Haqsau - your advice is always helpful.  I'm now driving with manual
gears (don't know what I was so afraid of!)  I think you're right - auto is
very useful when learning a new track..
