GPL - 'Ring problems

by Jim » Tue, 20 Mar 2001 04:09:11

Hi all,

There's a jump at the Ring that I can't get right. From the Pflanzgarten
sign there's a long-ish double-apex righthander, then a left, then a
downhill left which is where the jump is. At the moment I'm taking this
slowly in second gear at the extreme left hand side (2 wheels out on the
grass) so I avoid taking off - I'm scared of spinning if I go any faster.
Any tips as to how this jump "should" be taken?

My other problem is immediately after this jump, where there's a
right-left-right-left-right sequence before the bridge and the
Schwalbenschwanz sign. I basically drive on the grass for the first two of
the RLRLR sequence, which straightens things out somewhat. Firstly, how
"should" this corner sequence be driven, and secondly, am I being
unsportsmanlike or cheating or whatever if I decide to hop over the grass?

:0)

Thanks

Jim

OK first for the jump...to land a jump in GPL, you should blip the throttle
in the air.  It gets the nose up a little to make for a soft landing...if
you hit the brakes or lift off the gas too much, the nose drops and you lose
control...SO on that left hander, you can enter it pretty fast and when the
ground drops out, lift a smidgen, then give the engine a nice firm blip
while you are in the air.  This should cure all your problems there.  On
that next sequence, I cant seem to remember exactly how it goes, but
basically dropping 2 tires off isn't bad.  Try not to drop off all 4s,
though.  It will take a little bit of memorizing to get through those first
few blind left rights...For the tight right hander at the end of that
section that goes over the bridge, hmmm if I remember correctly, brake a bit
after the grey line gets darker, and turn in real early.  The car doesn't
want to turn much there and will normally push outby the time you get to the
apex and the exit.  Just remember to get the car slowed down for the
following left hander because that section really gets your adrenaline
flowing.

Is this right before the second Karroussel?  I can't get that run to the bridge
correct, either...   I can stay on the track fine, but I can't get NEARLY the
speed that I see others getting... :(

Blip seems to suggest that your intending the RPMs to rise only for a short
period. I tend to just keep the throttle down through the whole section,
just losing a little bit of speed before I turn to drop so I don't fly into
into the fence. A lot of racers drop on idle, it's a shame because this is
the worst thing to do.

You mean there are other ways to drive it? :) I suppose you could take
the first two kinks slower which might provide you with a better speed
for the rest of the run, but I've never felt the need for it...

Well I am not a hotlapper, so I normally don't take the revs to the rev
limiter when driving.  If you are making hotlaps, go ahead and floor the
gas...its just when you are trying to conserve the motor (which is a tough
job with the Honda) it is wise to just give it a blip to keep from
overrevving, yet still keeping the nose from dropping.

Whoop!

Thanks for the help folks. I used what you lot told me and studied a few
hotlap replays and just now managed an 8:39.78 in the Ferrari. That's
one-and-a-bit seconds slower than Eldred..... note that on Saturday my
quickest Ring time was 68 seconds slower than his!

It's 5 a.m. now so best be off to bed, I'm going to be *sooooo* sleepy
tomorrow but what the hell, my gplrank is now 44 :0)
