Just thought I would post a quote from Jackie Stewart talking about his
last win (Nurburgring):

"Had I not won a Grand Prix there, there would have been something sadly
missing from my career -- but, really, wasn't it a ridiculous place?
Leaping from one bump to another, 187 corners or whatever it was!  The
number of times I thanked God when I finished a lap there. . . I can't
remember doing one more balls out lap at the 'Ring than I needed to.  It
gave you amazing satisfaction, no doubt about it, but anyone who says he
loved it is either a liar or he wasn't going fast enough. . . Me, I like
that place best when I'm sitting by a log fire on a winter's night", he
smiles.  "Clearly in my mind are all the braking distances and
gearchanges, and that's surely the only way I've ever lapped it without
a mistake!  Each apex clipped, each exit clean. . . lovely."

Michael,

Thanks for the great post. This demo has me pulling out all my books about the
subject. I just read from Lauda's book," My Years With Ferrari" chapter 9 "1st
August 1976" which of course was the date of his accident at the Bergwerk
section of the Ring. Very scary place indeed. I have a friend who just returned
from shooting a Porsche commercial on the Nurburgring, he said he's never been
so scared in his life as when a Porsche test driver took him on a lap to scout
locations, actually, I don't think I could have done it, he was lying on his
stomach, on a special camera platform built onto the back of a Mercedes Station
Wagon. At one point in the tape, a trio of Ducati catch the Merc and blast by
in a long sweeper, great footage! Unfortunatly, the production company cannot
release any of it. : (

Thanks Michael about the post!

I'm actually thinking of riding my bike down to the Ring this summer and do
a couple of laps there for 7DEM or something ... to learn the track before
GPL ships! (yeah right!) :-)

Be careful, though, you can't disable a very realistic damage model in
real life. It even includes DirectPain (TM). :)
The guard rails are pretty expensive on the Ring, and no, the entrance
fee doesn't include any insurance...
When I go there next time, I'll probably take the "Ring-Taxi", where a
pro driver takes you around the track in a touring car at racing
speed. Costs a bit more initially, but can be much less expensive in
the long run... ;)

I actually did this a few years back, a guy named Michael Martini drove
us around the Nordschleife in a BMW M5, needless to say we got around
the track a BIT quicker than I did in my own car, the bike guys almost
falling over themselves to get out of our way :-), well worth the 75DM
(40$ ?) it cost back then, only thing was that we had an off (some
stupid git not using his mirrors) and we cracked the oilsump on the
engine so I never got the FULL treatment, but it was one of coolest
experiences I`ve ever had in a car

Beers and cheers
