GPL works on laptop, controller needed !?

by Harri Vaini » Sat, 21 Jul 2001 18:00:25

After a year of dry season in GPL and after selling my PC I got a revelation
to install "the game" into my work laptop (Compaq Armada M300). For my
surprice, the game works reasonably well in this tiny machine!!!

I get a sweet fps on software rendering in 640x480 and even get the D3D
functioning in 800x600. Keyboard control is a *** though (finally figured
that I have to have NumLk on in order to get things even going) but these
small laptops have an USB port nowadays, so even that's not going to be a
problem.

It never occurred to me how much I missed the sound of the Ferrari before I
took a few laps on Watkins Glen....

Now, a question: what to use for controller? I used to play the game with my
Logitech FF wheel, but now I would be ready to settle for less. Something
small, but analog. Any ideas? It should be small enough to take with me. Is
there even a small FF stick around?

Since it's a laptop, it might be a good idea to get an analogue gamepad
that you can hold in your hands while playing, and it's more compact
than the regular joysticks. I have no idea how controllable GPL would be
under such circumstances, though, but probably much more than with a
keyboard.

I too have a laptop with GPL.  My laptop is a top of the line dell
inspiron 8000.  I get 1280x1024 and 30+fps with mirror detailed and sky
off.  I use a logitech force feedback wheel via usb.  works well.  wish
it had a regular game controller.  Does anyone know of an adapter?

cheers,

christopher

Hmmm,
a small wheel, turned with indexfinger and thumb for you right hand (just a
small pot basically) and two butttons for throttle and brake for the other
hand (pressure sensitive  if possible)
it could be really small and enable you to play GPL anywhere!
Anybody here handy enough?

I used to have a very small joystick shaped like a hand granade (now how
tacky is that :) but it worked brilliantly!! Seems to me that back in early
90's there was a lot more innovation in this area.

In PS there is a controller called NegCon that would do the trick, but again
it's for only PS (and it not even supported in GT3...)

Anything like this for PC around or how about that company making the small
wheel... Anyone.... PLEASE?!?!?

Inter Act. I think they have discontinued the item. I have 1 of the little
beasts, and it works fairly well.

Same notebook here, same result at mirror/2, driver arms off and 2D-wheels.
I use a LWFF too.
Compared to my home PC (Cel900 with V3 and SBlive) the sound is awful, the
graphics are ok (sometimes a bit stutter on the first lap) and the screen is a
bit far away (luckily I bought the 15" version :-)

The best of the story: racing against other freaks in my livingroom with a
fabulous connection but without expensive online time :-)))

The guys from Remote control cars have such thingies. Since they all operate
with potentiometers it should be not a big deal to wire one to the serial port.
(this I state despite my limited electronics knowledge)
