Cards with the same chip have almost identical performance. The Ti4600 is
currently top of the range. There are several cards with this chip -
I have the creative one, but they are all the same.

Not, quite. Some have faster memory than others. The 64mb cards use 3.8ns
ram while the 128mb cards use 4ns ram. That's what I read anyway so not
sure if that applies to *all* cards or not. I know Abit Siluro 64mb uses
3.8ns ram. I bought an MSI GF4 4200 128mb though because I figured loading
large textures into the onboard vid ram without using system ram is more
important for newer games (I can't stand little pauses in my games). I've
already tested the memory clock on this card and it looks like I will be
able to run at close to 550mhz safely anyway (which is same as 4600),
haven't tested the core clock yet though.MSI driver installs a utitillity
which will test the ram for you and tell you how fast you can run at
safely. It gave me a result of 546mhz.450mhz is default.

Fair enough. I saw a bake-off on tom's hardware between four cards and
the results in terms of fps were so close as to make no difference. Cant
remember what the memory config of the cards was though.

The bigger the better I guess -- I think the top one's at the moment is
Ti4600? With such a card, you really have to have a whopper of a system to
get all the power out of it, though. Otherwise, the CPU or
memory/motherboard will be your system bottleneck, and you'll have some 50-
100 extra quids sitting in the box doing nothing...

That's because he didn't overclcock any of them. They are all still running
at spec speed so the benchmarks will be very close. Ones with faster ram
will usually overclcock better and that is why you might want to buy a
brand with known faster ram. If you are not going to OC then any one will
pretty well do. I read just a little while ago that the Asus GF4 4200
Deluxe is using 3.3ns ram. Note the "Deluxe", they are the ones that come
with 3D glasses and VIVO, or maybe it's just video out. They cost quite a
bit more of course.

I got a Gainward Ti4400 128 mb , which has 3.8 ns ram. I believe some of the
64 mb Tiu4600's actually use 3.2 ns ram.
Best thing to do is check out the specs on the card your interested in.

The best one, of course, is the Ti4600.

The one you want to absolutely stay away from is the GeForce 4 MX.

It depends on what you can afford from there.
