Help - Need for speed 5 and winXP

by DJ » Thu, 10 Jan 2002 12:23:09

Hello,  I was just wondering if anyone has gotten NFS 5 to work with win XP
?  Is there a patch or tweek I could apply to get this to work on my system
?  I tried seaching the net but I didn't find anything.  Everytime I go to
start the game, I see the title screen,  the hard drives starts up like it
was loading, but it just hangs and then boots me to the desktop after few
minutes.  I am running a AMD 1600 XP,  Radeon 8500 (omega drivers), 512 mg
ram, soundblaster 5.1 and winXP.  Thanks in advance, Daryll

Here is the fix :  All you have to do to get NFSPU to work in XP is to
delete the file
> "gimme.dll" from the NFSPU directory

Yes, but if it still doesn't work you may need to change the pagefile size.
To do that bring up System Properties (right click My Computer and choose
Properties.)

Next click on the Advanced tab.  Click the Change button down below in the
"Virtual Memory" section

Next set the Max size somewhere around 400mb and click Ok.  You'll have to
reboot for the changes to take effect.  Now you should be able to run
Porsche Unleashed with no problems.

With my XP, virtual memory is at 768MB, and the gimmie.dll is
there....but....I've had no problems at all.  ??

Your'e one of the lucky few!
Yet another thing to celebrate! :)

This problem will vary from system to system. My impression is that most
people will have to tweak the pagefile to get it running on W2k and XP. I
would recomend only adjusting the pagefile and keeping gimme.dll. How small
the pagefile should be made will also vary.
Note that if you start with a small pagefile, you can increase it without
having to reboot.
This way you can find the "perfect size".

I will have to try the solutions the others gave.

One solution that I heard of and tried was to right click on the .exe file
and then tell it to run in Win98 Compatability mode.

It worked.. but the graphics were horrible and the game ran slow
