OT: bootup cpu temps

by Dave Henri » Sat, 12 Apr 2003 23:08:55

I currently have my win98se/amd2100+ system setup with microsoft client
running the nic card for my cable modem.  So I have the little box that
comes up just before the desktop boots that wants my name and password.  I
always esc past this, no password entered.  However, if I am away from the
computer while it's booting, the boot process will stop at the id box until
I come back to hit the esc key, and I've noticed something odd.  If my
system spends any length of time waiting for me to log in or esc, the cpu
temp really climbs...usually almost 10c over idle temps and even higher
than after a long racing session.  What causes the cpu temp to be so high
when the system is virtually on hold?

least there is air moving all the time)

Don't know about the temps, Dave, but if you aren't logging in why not just
get rid of the blasted password box?

If you don't want to use passwords, try the following:

1.  Create a temp folder on the desktop.
2.  Go to the Windows directory, and move all *.PWD files to that temp
folder.
3.  Restart.
4.  When the password dialog comes up, just press return.  In other words,
leave it blank.
5.  If everything is ok, you can delete the temp folder you created after
you've determined you really don't need the PWD files.

You should now be able to boot up without dealing with the password dialog
at all.
