F1 2001, what's with the setups

Bought F1 2001 yesterday and have both good and bad impressions.

First, it ran almost perfectly out of the box on my V5, only problem
is that the cars in front disappear too soon, which there already
exists a fix. At 800x600x16 2xFSAA the framerate looked usable
(haven't got fraps, and my computer is offline). I loaded up Spa, and
it looked very very good. Sound is incredible and the car handles in a
believable manner.

But to get as far as this, I had some trouble with the steering. First
my MSFF gameport version had the huge deadzone problem on the pedals,
so I had to use combined axis which solves the problem in mysterious
ways. Then I never learn what all this sensivity stuff is all
about. So I set all the sensivity sliders to 0. Smart idea, completely
uncontrollabe car, and why didn't they just call it non-linear from
the first place. Then I bumped all the sliders to 100%. Thats more
like it, full control. However, a little bit too much. Since I hate
non-linear steering, I reduced the wheel lock to about 15-16 and the
game really came to life.

But WTF, when I entered the setup screen again after a few practice
laps, the steering lock was back to 23. I chance tire compound, and
after a few laps and back in the setup screen this was the same as
before the change. What's going on ? Do I have to save and load a
setup each and every time I cange something ? What have i missed ?

get 30 fps hot lapping but cannot race since the framerate drops to under
10.  All graphics full, but frankly not much difference when I drop them
down to mid level.

Thanks,

I don't think it auto-saves the setups, like other programs do.  You
have to save the changes each time.  The really stupid thing is that
when you load a setup, even if you make no changes to it, you have to
save it again or it discards the changes.  Brain dead programming.

you have to save your setup each time, and you have to name it each time
too, Patch guys take note, fix the save setup thing, also the replay system
is screwy.

Olav,
I agree, this bugs me too.  Could you point me to this fix you mention?

Hi Olav
Hot tips from the Highgear forum for the MSFF.

1  to fix the deadzone problem on the pedals use DXTweak and tick the boxes
for the X,Y & R axis, then on the Y & R double the raw values i.e. for the
MSFF it should show 63 change it to 126, voiala full pedal range in split
axis, only problem is if you run the game controller app. after it will
reset the values so run that first then change the values.

2 it looks like 50% is full linear for the sensitivity sliders, 0% is non
linear faster in the middle/slower at the ends, 100% is non linear slower in
the middle/faster at the ends,
so try setting all sensitivity sliders including the speed one to 50%.

Thanks to AstonMan for these tips.

Mark

Yes, thanks. I know about that fix, but I still await the installation
of a cable modem, so with a offline computer, there isn't much that
can be done at moment.

I'll try that.

Do a search on groups.google.com for F1 2001 V5 or something. It's
about setting at LODxxxxxxx variable in a config file to 3 or 4
instead of 1. Haven't tried it yet :)
