Null Modem hook up Q's

by Mitchnt » Thu, 30 Jan 1997 04:00:00

During the Daytona 500, a buddy and I are trying to arrange a watch party.
Part of that is possibly hooking two PC's via null modem cable for our own
speed week (day).

Will N2 automatically assign the com port speed in it's built-in
communications routine?

Has anyone bought or built a null modem cable?  How long was the cable?
What was the latency?

If the PC's were in the same room, were there any distractions from the
oppositions PC sound?

I can't remember for sure. but I think that N2 uses com1 and com3 and my
mouse is on com1 and modem is on com3.  Will I have to disable my modem to
avoid conflicts, if my rememberances are correct?

No, at least mine didn't.  I had to manually setup the comports for both
machines.

Yes, I made my own.  For less than $14.00 you can make a 50' cable.  All
you need is a spool of three strand wire,  two RS232 25 pin female
connectors, ( Depends on your com port ) and a cover for each connector.
Hook up pins 2, 3, 7 on one end, and then cross pins 2 and 3 (3, 2, 7)  on
the other.  All is available at a Radio Shack.

Some, but the enjoyment of razing the other guy without trying to use those
chat macros in N2 more than makes up for it.

Coms 1 & 3 use the same IRQ, as does 2 & 4.  I would suggest moving the
modem to another COM if it is indeed sharing a IRQ with the mouse.
Actually, it would probably be easier to just move the mouse.  The DOS
mouse driver included with the MS Mouse will search the ports till it finds
the mouse.  Other mouse software will probably have a switch for the
command line to tell it where the mouse is located.

And in defiance of what others are saying, if DOS can see the COM port, so
can N2.  My mouse is on COM1, modem is COM2 & NULL modem is on COM4.  All
ports are seen and reported by N2. I don't know about COM3, as I don't have
anything confgiured on it, but I would be willing to bet that it works
also.  Again, run MSD, or watch your screen while it boots, and see how
many, and which serial ports are being reported.

Good luck.
