Well guys, I haven't got 2003 yet.  Australia, we got another week to go
before its in the stores.  Anyway, just going through the posts quickly, I'm
amazed.  This release of 2003 must be the best 1st day response for quite a
long time in this joint.  Haven't seen one post of "this is a POS, and its
going back to the store"   Yes, theres been a few, "well this isn't quite
right, but I can live with it".
So guys whats your opinion?  Has Papy raised the bar for other racing sims
to be compared against?

None of the others have been close since Nascar 3, actually :)

Yes.  I think it's the best effort since the N3 to N4 conversion a few years
back.

Short answer; yes.  It's a bit like the jump from N4 to NR2002, but perhaps
bigger and in different areas.  The new car physics and tire model are the
biggest change so far for me, and having just *tried* an online fixed-setup
race at Darlington, the new surface bumps make a BIG difference.  Supposedly
there are new anti-cheat features as well, which has to be a good thing.

It is good. It would be hard going back to NR02 after this, so I guess it's
worth the price of my free reviewer's copy :-)
In 02, I never had a huge difference in D3D to OpenGL. In N03 I do. At
1600x1200x32 in D3D in the pit at Daytona, 73fps. In OpenGL, 103 fps and
averages 130 around the track in testing.
I can easily hold a line inches from the wall. There are lot's of little
driving differences, lot's of little graphics differences. It adds up.

Well considering that was true for almost every title since Indy 500 : The
Simulation, we can easily say "YES!!" :)

It's just that, it's normal that they have reach a certain level where
additions to the game in the future will be minimal, until PC *** starts
doing real-time game engine physics.

I think they did raise the bar quite a bit.  Case in point being Bristol (or
any track, but I went to BMS first).  I was able to drive a race, very
competitively and happily moments after installing the game.  The only thing
I did was select the fast setup from the garage menu.  With the new Adaptive
AI I really was in the thick of it immediately.  I had an absolute blast,
great framerate, and became totally hooked on this game.

I began to think of myself as Dale Jr. Junior.

Then I noticed that Traction control, Anti-lock brakes and all the other
helpful "cheats" were turned on.  Opponent Strength was 70%.  A little
balloon bursting there.  Oh well, turn it all off, turn the opponents back
to about 90% and I was right back to my usual self, a lame wannabe driver :)
Phew!!!  I thought for a moment Papy had lost it. Now I can get to working
on my setup, (and using the amazingly helpful driving line display) and
getting better little by little.

And yes, when I get a little frustrated at my lack of ability to move up the
leader board... on go the "cheats" and I'm back to rubbin with Dale Jr
again!!!!

What a great mix and a great idea - Adaptive AI  -  Well done.

This is going to be a standard for a few years, I think.  The graphics are
crisp and fast, sound is great, and the playability ranges from novice
newbie to serious sam.  What could make it better?  Well, they could get one
of the Labonte brothers to swing by the house and show me some tricks...
but this is the real world...

Its a hell of an improvement..and many things about it, you cant put your
finger on....one of my thoughts is "it just FEELS smoother"....hard to
explain.
Killer graphics........tire model....suspension movement.....etc etc

My experiences with N2k2 and Bristol were AI crashfests.   Did the
computer Controlled cars behave?

Actually, they did.  They seemed to have it in for me though :)  I actually
got the feeling that they remembered me if I hit them.  I swear Sprague in
the NetZero car was after me.  All I did was nudge him a little about 4 laps
in (ok, I moved him a ***sy bit up the track).  From then on, it seemed to
me, that every time we were near each other he would nudge me, or flat out
whack me.

Can't tell you if that is just a feeling or if that's really programmed in,
but there you have it.

I would not give it a 10 out of 10, simply because I wish more had
been done in the gameplay department, a nice realistic career mode for
those of us that enjoy single player racing, better/more driving
lesson videos, an easier-to-use in-game paintkit (thinking Thunder
2003 for the consoles here), etc etc.  It's definitely a 9.75 out of
10 tho IMHO because of the huge changes to the driving and AI engines,
but I can see how people could give it a much more mediocre score
because the gameplay itself hasn't been enhanced much.

To answer your question more concisely, it's the best pure driving and
racing simulation ever made for the home market by a mile.  On the
other hand, if you don't really care for multiplayer there hasn't been
much done to enhance the longevity of the game.

Speaking of Bristol, I'll be damned if I can keep the car facing the
right direction without braking.
