N4: 3D sound

Some observations about the 3D sound in N4:

- I can now now select between Direct Sound, A3D and EAX. The demo had only
Direct Sound.
- The a3d.dll in the N4 folder is dated 29.11.1999. Copying a newer version
(6.3.2000) into the N4 folder makes no difference though.
- The A3D splash screen sometimes hangs N4 or Windows - I disabled it.
- Setting # of sounds heard to 16 (sometimes 15 is enough) or more disables
the 3D sound.
- Tire skid sound is heard only in the right channel in the***pit view.
- The 3D effects are now minimal; the muffled engine sound in the roof view
is easiest to hear. In the demo there were some dynamic filter effects: The
engine sound did change depending on track position (mimicing reflections?)
and I think the pass-by sounds in the replays were more dramatic...

Is this normal? Did they reduce the 3D effects in the release version? I
have a Diamond MX300 with the latest reference drivers, Win98 and
DirectX8.0a.

I got my copy of N4 from
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
It arrived in five days to Finland.

N4: 3D sound

I have used the Direct X sound(whatever that is called in the game?)
and the sounds 'reflect' very well.  I have an OEM Aureal card(A3d 2.0) ,
with the last set of drivers that I know of...v2048 seems to jog my memory.
I didn't notice the problems you mention.  Try  the other effects, EAX and
Dx sound to see if the problems persist. (fwiw, the EAX effects are done by
the Aureal drivers in software right?)

I tried them (Direct Sound, A3D, EAX) with no success. I have v2048 drivers
and A3D drivers v3.12, which are the latest. The demo sounded better in my
system.

Well ok....  uhm  I know they re-worked the sound due to problems with
some Soundblaster cards in the demo.  So...perhaps get over to
the Sierra forum and ask Eric Busch for help.(he's kinda the sound
gopher at Papy.)  Good luck.
ps...Eric if you see this..no offense...I just don't know your official
title :)
