N4: incorrect AI strength settings?

by AJS » Sat, 14 Apr 2001 03:25:42

Hi all-

I've been playing the Nascar Racing series from Papy since NR2.  In N4,
I've noticed that the computer opponents settings you choose before a race
seem very inconsistant.  For example:  I am an "average" driver, yet at
Dover Downs, I have to set the AI strength to 106% to even be competitive,
yet at Atlanta, to run with the big boys, I need to set it to 93%.  Thats
quite a difference. My question is: Am I a God at Dover Downs and merely
average at Atlanta?  Or is the strength settings wrong? Anyone else notice
this? Try it.  It seems the AI strength is different at every track. I used
to be able to run 100% at 'Dega and be in the top 10. Not even close
anymore, I'm getting disgraced at 95%.  This is a stock installation, no
mods or "upgrades".  Thanks!

I noticed at Martinsville, the Cup guys are running slower than in the
sim... but they have a "new tire" or something there.

N4: incorrect AI strength settings?

I've always noticed this with all of their offerings. To combat this so I
can keep it at a constant AI % we have to give the track.ini's for each
track some lovin so the competition is even throughout. Your example was a
13% swing, but I notice differences even at 1-2%. So by honing track.ini you
can basically set the AI to run exactly what you are running at each track.
Helps collisions for one since everyone is going the same speed, plus I like
to make all the AI nearly identical in the opponent manager area, with
little variance between low and top level ratings for each category.

I like the AI to be at different levels in ability to help string the
field out kind of like in real racing...  a pack here, a pack there..
some guys consistently "run up front" for the most part...

I setup a range of classes, A, B, C and D and group drivers into those
groups and then set their AI settings to those levels.  Makes for
better racing IMHO.  I did this with the BGN cars I have downloaded
and while it was alot of work, so far I've been happier with that
setup than the standard AI.
