I'm having the same problem :(

Just bought a Monster3DII (Voodoo 2) 12 meg, and my computer also freezes.

I had Orchid Righteous Voodoo1 card and it worked fine.

Any Ideas.

I'd be interested in know what motherboard you have, and whether you're
overclocking it.  I have this problem as well, with an Abit LX6.

The game will freeze after running for about 10 min. but the sound will
continue on. I can use the windows key on my keyboard to exit the game
then I have to  ctrl-alt-del to get into the "close program box" and
close the papy window, I have to do the same to gpl in the "close
program box" to get out of the program completely.

 Win 98
 DFI BX motherboard
 P2 - 266
 64 megs
monster 3d 2- 12 meg - have tried the 3dfx Ref, and both of Diamonds
drivers
 sblaster 32

Thanks for any help. This is starting to look like a bug.

Overclocking the Voodoo 2 made GPL lock up in a couple of seconds/minutes. I'm
now running the V2 at 90 Mhz. No probs.

I suffered from this too, until I replaced my mobo and CPU (okay, so
I wanted an upgrade anyway!).

Are you overclocking?  I think PCI bus speed may be a factor here.

SNIP

I have the same problem, my V2 is not overcloked and the game freezes after a
few minutes of play, but it looks that ONLY the display is freezing, because
the sound will reflect exactly what I'm doing up to the moment at wich I'll
hit a wall or break. And I can terminate the program with Alt Ctrl Del and
then restart the game. No need to reboot

And the same problem occurs with Monaco Grand Prix Racing but with this one
the whole thing freeze (sound image and all) and I must reboot.

I did not find any solution yet.

Same thing with my Canopus total 3d (V1000).  Tonight I got pixel dust
screens repainting over and over, very slowly.  The hard drive light was
also blinking.

I solved a very similar problem (sometimes was dropped back to the
desktop, sometimes screen frozen and sound continouing) by setting my
RAM timing from 60 to 70 ns (who laughs? there ARE still some old MoBos
out there....)
I lost about 1-2 fps, but the sim is now absolutely rock solid!

Well, the mistery continues and it's happening to me too but, maybe
this helps:

Until last week, I had a PII 300 on a QDI LX MB with 128 Mb and 8Mb
V2. No problems with GPL at all. Then I changed round to a new QDI LX
MB (I own a shop and like to turn the stock around!!), fitted a 12 Mb
V2 and PII 333. Now EXACTLY the same probs as you guys are having.

New drivers, PCI configs in BIOS, nothing I have tried has sorted it.

Well...I tried changing to 70 ns.  Still locked up.

What's the thinking on PCI bus speed as an issue?

> What's the thinking on PCI bus speed as an issue?

Well..it has to do with how your mobo deals with your bus speeds.  With
chipsets prior to BX, which introduced the 100Mhz front-side bus, your
PCI bus runs at your bus speed (normally 66Mhz) divided by 2.  The PCI
bus is designed to run at 33Mhz.  Running at 75Mhz bus means it runs at
37.5, at 83 it's running at 41.5.  This may be causing Voodoo2 cards
some anguish.

With the BX boards, and 100Mhz front-side bus, the PCI speed is divided
by 3 rather than 2, producing the required 33Mhz.

I've cured my freezing problems by moving from an Abit LX6 running at
83Mhz to an Abit BH6 running at 100Mhz.

Hmmm, I think you're on the right tracks here but it doesn't explain
why it didn't lock with my old LX Mb, PII 300 and 8 Mb V2 but does
with a new LX Mb, PII 333 and 12 Mb V2..

I admit, changing all possible BIOS setting to minimal timings, it
improves the problem but it still locks eventually.
