I got this reply from Sierra on the lockup problem in GPL

Andy

"I am sorry, but this is a known problem for GPL when running on the
Diamond
Voodoo2 graphics board. We have not been informed of any definite fix
for
this issue and have no Monster Voodoo2 boards here "In the support
division"
for testing. We have been recommending that customers try turning off
all
other programs before running GPL with varying results. Our engineers
are in
contact with Diamond on this issue, and we will be doing all we can to
find
a solution on our end. I have heard that there is a way to temporarily
under clock the board using a batch file but I do not know the exact
details
of doing this. Perhaps Diamonds support would give you instructions for
this
as I have heard some customers have had success using this method. If
you
discover anything on your end that works, please send us the details so
that
we can share this information with others."

What lockup problem are you talking about?  I've been running GPL on SLI'd
8meg Monster2's running at 95 for an hour a night (at least) since it came
out. Not one crash or freeze.  Wasn't aware there was a problem here.

I was having this problem with the 3dfx directx6 candidate release
drivers.

I was running for 1.5 hours today and had no lockups - all on monza with
different cars.

I have had other problems but loading a "PCI Routing Table Fix" for my
motherboard from  ( WARNING THIS PATCH MIGHT CAUSE YOU TROUBLE, UNLESS
YOU HAVE A FYI VIA MVP3 Motherboard don't try it)
http://www.fyi.com.tw/download.htm  . (Thanx to diamond techsupport
which put me on the trail).

My system is:
  K6-2 300, 12MB Diamond monster 3D II, Diamond Monster sound M80, Win95
OSR2

That's news to a lot of people who've had no problems. Lock-ups have
generally been associated with the RC1 version of the 3dfx reference drivers
and have not been seen as card-specific.

me. During a hotlap at the 'Ring.

This is not card specific, and Papy needs a bug fix.

Funny that this was not an issue with the demo. Maybe it's a PII thing as we all
upgrade. My AOpen board has a built in PII bug fix for eg.
