GPL GFII problems

I keep getting bad fps with my Asus 7700 GFII GTS in GPL..
I tried a couple of different drivers, right now I'm using the
detonator 6.50 drivers.
With a full field, I get 26fps at the back, and even when all the cars
are out of sight the fps stays around 30.
With my V3 card I had 36fps a couple of secs after the start.

Weird thing is, some games work lots better (N4 now has about 40fps,
sometimes up to 60 with 42 cars on the road), with my V3 that was
around 20fps.

Any ideas how to improve fps in GPL with a GFII card?

What resolution?  What CPU?  Which renderer are you using?

Marc.

What CPU speed?  My GF2 GTS was slower than my V3 3000 when it was

Resolution doesn't matter that much actually.
In 640 it's 26fps, 800 it's 23fps and 1024 it's 22fps.
I use a PIII500 and run GPL in D3D.

Could be it.. someone told me indeed that my PIII500 would be too slow
for a GFII card. Weird thing is, I have big performance increase in
most other games, N4 and F1CS2k for example.
Next week my PIII866 will arrive, I'll report how the fps increase is
with that pc.
Thing is, I have a league race tomorrow, and with all these driver
version and options I wondered if I could do something to speed up GPL
till my new pc arrives..

Thanks for the info,

I found out a lot of interesting stuff at http://www.geforcefaq.com whilst I
was setting up my new GeForce2 Ultra card.  Something there may help you
out.

How much RAM do you have?  I seem to remember reading somewhere that the
GeForce2 cards are better when you have 256Mb of RAM.

Another opossibility is whether you are using FSAA or not.  I have been
doing some benchmarking using the test utility in Mercedes Benz Truck Racing
and found that using the 2x2 FSAA setting gave a very poor framerate
compared to all the other FSAA settings.  For example, my PC is a P3 800
with 256Mb RAM, SB Live! 1024 and an Elsa Gladiac GeForce2 Ultra 64Mb.  I am
using the 6.50 Detonator drivers and got the following results in MBTR:

800x600, 16-Bit Colour
==================
No FSAA: 65.7 fps
1x2: 59.0
2x2: 30.8
2x2 Hi Res: 50.2
2x2 Special: 47.5
3x3: 50.4
3x3 HiRes: 50.3
4x4: 50.3
4x4 HiRes: 50.3

1024x768, 16-Bit Colour
===================
No FSAA: 62.0
1x2: 52.3
2x2: 25.8
4x4: 40.1
4x4 HiRes: 40.1

It appears that 2x2 FSAA is a bad setting to use, at least with MBTR.  Maybe
you have selected this setting.  With my PC in GPL I get 30fps at the start
up to a sold 36fps after 2 to 3 seconds with 4xFSAA Hi Res enabled at
1024x768.

Cheers

Phil

Also you might find the GeForceAASet utility from this site:
http://www.geocities.com/mastercoco/ useful.  It provides an easy method for
changing your FSAA settings using an icon in the systray.  It saves going
through about 5 menu levels to get at the settings anyway.

Have you tried disabling vsync?  Also if you use a serial wheel, disable the
fifo buffers in your serial port.  I run a cel500 with an old tnt1 card and
get 36fps at 800X600 online.  Offline I can run with all options on.  And if
you run win95 then set vcache manually in your system.ini file.  All these
helped me achieve a solid 36 with my lowly winmodem.

GF2 does run GPL slower than a V3 3000.  Well, it does when you compare
running with D3D on the GF2 versus Glide on a V3.  GPL with d3d on a V3
isn't so hot either if I remember.

It should really get up to 36 pretty soon though, say exiting turn 1 at
Monza.  Do you have a relatively slow CPU? (say P3-450 or slower)  Try
setting AGP aperture to the same size as the cards vram (as opposed to half
system ram), as this sped mine up a little.  Or else just turn the detail
bar down a little.

The basic problem is that the d3d renderer for gpl was written by one guy in
his spare time, whereas the N4 d3d renderer (and indeed the GPL glide
renderer) has had months of fine tuning and testing, plus it uses hardware
TnL.

Indeed, D3D with my V3 was much worse than with my GFII.
Glide was ofcourse much faster though.

Yep :( But 866 board will arrive next week :)

This is not clear to me (I'm a videocard newbie). What is AGP aperture
and where do I select this?

AGP Aperture should be in your BIOS somewhere, depending on the motherboard.

And I'll weigh in with my opinion - the fact that you see little difference
across multiple resolutions says that your CPU is the bottleneck;  the
P3-500 can't setup polygons fast enough to really let the GF2 stretch its
legs.  That 866 should make a big difference.

It bears repeating:  once you have 64mb ram and a decent videocard, a faster
CPU will always make the biggest difference with GPL.

Enjoy the new machine!

Ok, the 866 should get you sorted :)

As Rick said, those settings are in your system bios.  Messsing with the
bios isn't risky as long as your don't go changing stuff you don't
understand.  On the first few screens after turning on the machine (the
second screen I think) you'll get a message telling you how to enter the
bios, it usually involves holding down the DEL key on boot-up.  Once in
there find 'cache video bios' and 'cache video ram' and check they are both
off, then find 'agp aperture size' and try 32MB (if you have a 32MB card).

This made my GF2 perform a little faster with some stuff.  Then again, if
you're getting a new CPU next week anyway, it's probably not worth it.
