Can't run N4 now - KERNEL32.DLL error?!?

by Jeff Vince » Wed, 21 Mar 2001 12:10:31

I had been running N4 for a few weeks.  I went back to it tonight
(after 10 days or so off) and I get the following error message when I
start it:

"NASCAR Racing 4
NASCAR Racing 4 has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL
The program will close now.
If the problem continues, try restarting your computer."

Restarting doesn't help.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling N4
but I'm getting the same error.

About the only change since I last ran N4 successfully was I had an
old Windows95 install and an N4demo install on drive D: which I
purged.  I'm currently running WinME and have N4 installed on drive
C:.

   Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

It's been awhile, but I think you can get rid of that problem by going to
display properties/settings/advanced/performance and changing the hardware
acceleration setting.

Have you changed drivers for your video card lately? I was messing with
drivers for my Gforce2MX card and then my N4 started having errors. I looked
in my registry and found that I had 4 listings for display adapters! I
deleted them all and reistalled the video drivers (making sure I only had
one entry for display in the registry) and everything worked fine again! If
you've messed with anything in those 10 days, check there first.

Tried that with no positive results.  Thanks for the tip, though,
David.

My video install is fairly fresh, the last change was updated
drivers around 2/28.  I have N4 replays from after that, so it worked
after that.  I will poke around a bit more in the registry later,
though.

I've tried changing hardware acceleration levels and tried
reconfiguring N4 graphics (both OpenGL and D3D), but still the same
result.

Since we're focusing on video, I'm using a V5 AGP with driver file
3dfx32vs.dll, version 4.13.01.0028, dated 10/13/2000.  Anyone else
with any more ideas?  Is N4 jealous 'cause I've gone back to GPL?  :)
