CMR 3 error: This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found.

by JMI » Thu, 05 Jun 2003 09:44:16

Hello,

I'm getting the following error when I try to run the Colin McRae Rally 3
demo:

"This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

I've installed it 3 times now and that's made no difference.  And, in fact,
that file really is missing.  I've searched my drive and I can't find that
file anywhere.   Why it's missing, I've got no idea.  During the install I
didn't get any error messages so I would assume that it downloaded OK.

Has anyone run into this error message when starting the Colin McRae Rally 3
demo?  Anyone know the fix?  Or if anyone has that file, might you be able
to mail it to me?

Thanks for your time,

Jeff

Do you have Direct X 9 installed?  If not, install it.  If you have Direct X
9 installed already, you might try installing it again.

Check your video drivers of course. Also, a huge patch for the demo is
coming out in a few days.

Install DirectX 9.

Thanks!  That did the trick!  Only wish I wasn't as disappointed when I
finally got it to run!  I guess I was expecting it to look a lot better.
Especially if it requires DirectX9!  I've got an ATI Radeon 8500, which is
DirectX8 compatable so I should be able to see lots of effects, but I don't
see anything great.  Unreal Tournament 2003 looks WAY better (albeit an
entirely different kind of game).  But my 128mb card sure is capable of
great things!

Thanks for the tip!

Jeff
