GPL steering question

by Robert Virdi » Thu, 14 Jun 2001 23:18:26

While configuring my new FF wheel I "discovered" the "steer_ratio"
option in core.ini.  When it is set, the default, then you get extra
wheel output at low speeds.  This seemed to be definitely not
simulation, so I turned it off.

I immediately had to lower the ratio to a most 13:1 to be able to
drive in the pits and around sharp hairpins.  This, of course,
affected driving, but it wasn't too bad even with only limited
non-linearity.  After a while I got used to it.

Now to my question.  While testing different ratios I noticed that
*visually* the wheels only turned until the inner wheel was lined up
with the drivers line of site.  This is as it is in a real car.
Lowering the steering ratio even more just meant the you hit this
limit earlier.  Does this *visual* limit correspond to the effective
limit?  I.e. can I use set my maximum steering ratio checking that I
get full turning on the the steering wheel and front wheels?  This
limit would *visually* seem to be araound 12/13:1.

If this were the case then using a setting below this would not give
you MORE steering, it would just mean that you hit the maximum
earlier.

P.S. I love the FF wheel.  Not much for what I expected to feel but
for the feed back from the car.  You can feel the rear-end swaying.

GPL steering question

I have just found the answer to my question.  The main straight at
Monza is wide enough for testing so I did some experiments.  Using a
smaller ratio, like 8:1, gives a smaller minimum turning radius than a
larger ratio, like 12:1.  I am experimenting with 10:1 to give enough
turning but not too sensitive.  I am not completely linear, this is
too compensate for my wheel not being able to turn as much as a "real"
wheel.
