I sure wish that someone ,,, whoever could create the circumstances that
all
online races used the F1 chassis with the option of forcing an F3 or F2
motor
i.e. FG or FD. It would be so cool to host un-passworded open FD or FG races
on Vroc.

Nobody races F2 or F3 online anymore. I wish there was a way to just do
away
with them at this point.

Ok, Flame away :)

PS: Thank you WinVroc and all who are responsible for the hours of
online bliss over the past couple years.

Um.  Unless I'm missing something, the only difference between F2 and
F3 is the engines.  The trainers use the same chassis as the F1 cars.
Either that or Mr. Smith lied in the F2 Superguide (!!).

I'm not going to flame over the 'no one races F2 part' because it's
obvious you know you're wrong too. =)

There is an utility that can modify the engines to create many types of
racing, including Grand Prix chassis with smaller engines, and vice-versa
(even using engines/chassis not found in the original unpatched GPL).  VROC
only has support for F2 or F3 types of racing, but nobody does that anymore
as FD and FG cars are much more interesting to drive.

I'm familiar with that utility.  However, based on Steve Smith's F2
Superguide, I was under the impression that an F2 car was the same as
a Grand Prix car with a less powerful engine (in GPL, obviously in
real life each class is an entirely separate design in most cases).  I
thought that the F2 and F3 cars used the same chassis as the Grand
Prix cars anyway.

The F2 and F3 cars are different from the F1 cars.  They have less power,
from memory the F2 has 270hp.  They also have less grip with narrower tyres.
You can prove this by running an FD car (F1 chassis with F2 engine) then
running the same F2 car.  The FD car has a lot more grip.

There is still a strong F2 community based around the VROC-F2 club.  There
are regular races open to club members every week.  All you have to do is
sign up.  There are a number of F2 leagues including the F2 Festival which
runs handicapped races and the EuroF2 league which runs 1 hour races.  The
best place to check out the F2/FD community is to visit JC's at

I still don't understand this F1, F2 and F3 thing with GPL.

I see one set of cars.  Where are the rest?

Where do you change from F1 to F2 or F3 ?

This is probably a stupid question to those that know, but since I'm just
getting into GPL after owning it for years, I have no idea what this is all
about.

F1 - the standard 400 hp Grand Prix car
F2 - the Advanced Trainer you can select in training
F3 - the Novice Trainer you can select in training
FD - F2 engine in an F1 chassis
FG - F3 engine in an F1 chassis

To use the different car classes, download GEM+ from

Yeah, I knew that F2 and F3 had less power, that's pretty obvious. =)

Ok, gotcha.  I always felt that F2 cars felt somewhat different
braking and grip wise but the F2 Superguide implied that the F2 cars
were just the F1 chassis with less power.  Thanks for correcting my
misconception. =)

Cool, I saw that webpage a long time ago but I wasn't racing VROC
then.  I'll have to check it out.  F2 cars are a lot of fun and I like
that the braking/turn-in points are still similar to the F1 cars even
though you're going slower (I'm guessing because of the braking/grip
differences).

Thanks again for clarifying,

Jason

FYI -

You can also race against the AI in the F2 or F3 cars by just changing one line in your player.ini file, which is in the
sierra/gpl/players/"yourname" folder.  Under the [personal information] stanza, change: driverRating = (to 1 for F3, 2 for F2, and 3
for F1).

Have fun,

Lots of good information flowing through this thread :) But I think my
point was missed. Example: On my server I can host an F3 race unpassworded
and everyone that joins would be forced into an F3 car. If I host a FD or FG
race
I  have to allow F1 chassis to join because those cars are an F1 chassis
with either an F2
or F3 motor. This creates a very uncompetitive racing environment when guys
join
in F1 cars and run with FG cars.

Anyway I was just wishing out loud, I know that these sorts of mods will
most likely
never happen. Its really to bad, because in my experiences in league racing
the FG's and
FD cars have produced the most close, competitive, fun racing I have ever
had.

Agreed, Dave; it would be nice to be able to force FD/FG in VROC.  They do make for good racing.  But I suspect it's not gonna
happen, since the other forced options are in INI files used by the game and the engine swapper requires patching the GPL.EXE.

I don't think they misunderstood - just pointed out that F2 is still very
much alive and that it is different from F1 in terms of chassis as well as
engine.

To answer your question, I don't think its possible to allow just FD cars
into a race, as FD cars appear to be F1 cars as far as the game is
concerned. This is what all the fuss was about when the engine changer was
released - how do you know what engine a car has?

To be honest, its pretty obvious when an F1 car takes on an FD - on the
straight they walk past without trying. So why not just run your FD races,
make it clear only FD are welcome, and ignore the plonkers who still join in
their F1s.

Dave,
I too love the F3 engines!  I have fun with the F2's as well but I'm a
die hard F3 guy.

I hate driving in circles and can't see the e***ment in doing so.  In
my opinion you could just have the Winston Cup guys drive a 500 mile
strait-a-way and have the same results.  But, I do like the constant close
competition, not just competitors that are close but competitors that
surround you all race long.  I also love the idea that Road racing has where
you have to be in constant control of your car braking, accelerating,
turning left, *turning right*, and at different levels for each at each
turn.  Anothwords, Driving in circles does nothing for me and is the reason
I haven't been racing N4 regularly And GPL, to date I haven't been able to
race with more then 3 competitors near by for more then 10 or 12 laps.  So I
need something that's in between N4 and GPL.  The Hybrid GPL cars
(FD-FG-FV..) come closer to what I like and I too wish we could set up a
dedicated server for the specific classes.

With luck someone(s) will build a VROC type of system and keep the
source code edit-able by the VROC"2"(?) server owner to do this so that the
real racing fans (as opposed to those that think going fast is racing) could
be introduced to the FD-FG-FV classes.

This wont solve the problem Michael - its not the availability of the source
code, its the lack of means to detect an FD car.

That is a real shame Paul,  Maybe the next great open wheel sim will solve
all of
these issues.  Someday someone has to come out with an open wheel simulator
with
the staying power of GPL , And a trainer car with the same physics just down
on power
a little bit, or at least I can hope :)
