N3 framerate stutters...

Anyone experiencing frame skipping when running close to the AI cars
in a race?  The skipping goes away as soon as the cars get beyond 4
car lengths from your front bumper.

P2-333 o/c'ed 400MHz
192Mb Ram
Voodoo3 3500TV o/c'ed to 200MHz Vsync Off
MX300 Sound Card
40.8Gb HD
MS FF Steering Wheel (FF disabled in game)

Using 1024x768 resolution, Glide, with 10 AI cars, all graphics set to
maximum.  Very apparent on the front straight at Bristol-Night.

I have the same problem.  The only solution is to run at 640X480.....then it
is silky smooth with all options maxed.  In 800X600 with every graphic
option off (and track draw to 0) it still stutters.

My system is a P2-400, 64ram, Voodoo3 3000.  I've seen posts from people
with P3-550 and voodoo boards describing the same problem, so obviously it's
not a lack of cpu muscle.

Please post if you find a solution.  My only problem with an otherwise
incredible game.

Sounds like a variation on the GPL 1.1 slo-mo problems.....

Marc.

I had a similar problem, may or may not be related to yours. My PIII 450
with 128 megs ram would occasionally stutter. When this happened, I also
had excess hard drive activity. I changed my virtual memory settings to
min and max of 100 megs. This helps keep the system from using too much
hard drive as ram and slowing the frame rates. I actually disabled
virtual memory, rebooted, defragged my drive, then set it to 100 meg.
This will make the 100 megs in one block on the HD for faster access.
This is with Win95. No experience with 98 though...

Hope this helps...

I'm beginning to wonder if this is a Voodoo3 problem.  Has anyone tried
different drivers?  I am using the most recent drivers (4.11.01.1224).

I'm wondering too since it is fine with my P2-450, 128MB ram and
12MB V2 card.

Does anyone know if it is possible to run a Voodoo 2 and a Voodoo3 together?
I still have my old 12meg Voodoo 2 and would be interested to see if I used
as a pass-thru card if it would make any differences in the frame rate chop
problem.

This stutter is not related to hard drive activity.  Although
harddrive activity during gameplay can cause stuttering, this stutter
is occuring with no harddrive access at all.  I did get stuttering
also on a friend's P3-450 with TNT.
