The***pit view is extremely restrictive.  It may be an accurate
representation of a photograph of the view while sitting in a WC car, but it
is a damned inferior view to try to sim. race from.  In real life, we don't
have to push buttons to flail our heads from one side to the other to get a
bit better perspective.  We can also lean forward or backward a bit to see
past the gigantic A pillar...like you need to do to navigate the curved pit
lanes.

The bumper cam is a far more dramatic and useful view, but it is useless to
race in traffic as you are down at bumper level.  Unless you want to
simulate racing in your car with only tractor trailer sized opponents, it is
dangerous and ineffective as you can't see up the track any further than the
next rear bumper in front of you.

What we need is a bumper cam-style view moved up and back to simulate the
position of the driver's seat in the car, or, a view that is a bit more
forgiving inside the***pit (my preference) that recognises that we have
extremely limited mobility and perspective sitting "outside" the screen in
our computer chairs.

What are the chances that either of these can be accomplished by fans
interested in modifying the original (as is already happening with new cars,
etc.)?

Marc.

well, if Dale Jr says this is the way it is, then that is enough for me. I
dont know how much moving and looking around you can do strapped into a
harness but it aint much

I was not aware that DE Jr. commented on the***pit view.  Don't assume
because he praised the overall physics and design of the game (which are
great) that everything is perfect or as good as it could be.  Or that a few
more options couldn't be offered.

Just use the rooftop view.  That's what I do.

Are you going to have some sort of heater blasting you in the face the
whole time and have the volume at ear-damaging levels as well?  I hate
to think what you do to yourself if you wreck...  :)

Seriously, there is plenty of "sim" in the physics engine.  I don't
need to irritate myself with an inferior view of the game just for
"realism's" sake.

Well he did, be sure of that ;-)

N4 is 99.5% like reality.  Everything some people have problems with (small
***pit view, pull to the left) is things that real-life WC driver cope up
each week.

Perfection will never be achieved with a software that simulates a real
thing.  Only the real thing will achieve such thing.  The only way a
software like N4 can be "perfect" is if it models a totally unique series
proper to it's own virtual environment.

The roof cam is very good.  Perhaps you did not see it.  Many people use it
because of the increased framerate and it gives you a very good modeling of
the weight distribution (especially when you enable the inside-car in the
mirror.

Actually, editing your own view will probably be soon possible.  I was able
with an alread-existing editor to change the replay views, so it's just
matter of time until the 3do (well what it now is...) get to be known and
edited.  Basically the***pit view works like GPL where you set a XYZ
position and you slap the virtual***pit at those position (putting the
gauges at the correct position like the roof cam).

Actually, your range of movement in the car can best be described as
"None".

You can move your arms and legs, and you can move your head a bit.
Enough to look left and right but not really enough to change your point
of view.  Your torso does not move at all.

This is important when driving because the g-forces in the turns do not
shift your body around.  You feel the G's but you do not have to fight to
keep your body situated in the***pit.  It is also extremely important
in case of an accident that you are secured TIGHTLY in the harness as
even a little slack could cause your body to get bounced around quite a
bit.

Why would it matter which race view you used?

Because, it does.

Just do a search on Deja about that, it's been argued for years.

Because, N4 host can restrict "guardian angel view", and only allowed to use
"cockpit view".

While I don't mind the size of the***pit, I do seem to have a problem with
keeping track of the car on the inside and thats going to be bad for league
racing. I't too easy to get bf'd.
