Try www.gp2.com. It is a _*MUST*_ if you have GP2. Download Matti's track
pack. It has many or most of the '98 tracks, Imola is particularly good.
He updates it frequently so if it ain't in at the mo, it soon will be.
There's also a track editor, and tons of other stuff,***pits etc.

I strongly reccommend the Track Manager hompage at
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/7479/.  This is a great site.  You
will not be disappointed.  Also Sjon's Grand Prix 2 Homepage at
http://www.volftp.vol.it/GP2/index.html is another excellent site.>

Do the new tracks actually include any real-life scenery?
I downloaded the argentina track the other week and was slightly
disappointed as it happened to be just the track and nothing else.

Cheers,

Uwe

They don't -yet-

You have to understand that this track-editing has started from ZERO. There is
no support from Microprose, Crammond or anyone else. The author of the
track-editor (Paul Hoad) has been bussy uncovering the fileformat of F1GP tracks
for a very long time, went over to GP2 and has been assisted by a number of
enthusiasts for the past few months. Keeping this in mind, the results are
absolutely incredible!

Real-life scenery is a problem because it is necessary to know the format of
objects. This is being worked on, but it is reported to be rather... difficult
:-)

Nevertheless I have seen quite a few tracks that made good use of existing
objects to create a believable environment. Not 100% authentic, but atmospheric
enough.

Anyway: the editor is still in alfa-stage. Things can only get better in the
future. And with a bit of luck, GP3 track format will be similar so we can
continue to use the editor for it!!!

Where do I find these tracks?  Every time I try to go to his site, I
can't download anything because all of the icons have slashes through
them.  I would love to try some of these tracks.

Yep, I have to agree. I went to gp2.com to download the 98 track
pack, and the modified barcelona track is perfect IMHO, even lap
times match real life (well, apart from me qualifying on pole
after a 100% race on the old track the previous day ;-) .

Great work, keep it up, people!

BTW, does the track editor run under WINE emulation within Linux?
I'd be interesting in helping along if this is the case.

Regards,

uwe

Yes they do!  Have a look at the new "tunnels-track"! That has some real-life
scenery!
Find it at

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/7479/trackfrm.htm

It's great!!, tunnels, cliffs, forest and lots of rocks!

Of course, Martijn    :-)

But my answer dates from a few weeks ago and for TYPICAL tracks. Don't think
your "tunnels" track is an example of a "typical" track at the moment!! Great
job. It is SO frustrating that people with normal computers have to sacrifice
all the textures to keep it playable at acceptable framerate, though...

Sidenote: when I drive it, I have this feeling that I'm driving in slowmo, even
when the PO only reads 70-80, and even though you didn't seem to experiment with
factors that influence grip and such. Any idea why I have this impression? For
some reason, I think the trees all around the track have an influence.

Keep those genius tracks coming!!!!
