ZoneAlarm and VROC

by Hoops7 » Thu, 18 Jan 2001 19:44:33

Hi all,
Anybody here managed to take part in races on VROC whilst having
ZoneAlarm running?

I have had ZoneAlarm since getting my ADSL connection and tried to
race on VROC this morning for the first time since having it installed
and my system froze up at the connection screen in GPL. I had to
completely re-boot as even the ol' ctrl-alt-del wouldn't get me out of
it.

Tried running a race on VROC afterwards without ZoneAlarm running and
it was perfect, although I was far from that :O(. I am just a little
worried about leaving my connection open like that, especially as I
plan to run a lot of races from now on.

Any advice??

PH,

I gave up on trying to run the two together a while ago and I've
seen lots of posts from others who have tried and failed.

You could try a couple of other products : Sygate is used quite
a lot and is free, not sure how good it is though. Also, if you
are really serios about having a good firewall, active at
all times there is lockdown2000 (www.lockdown2000.com)
It works fine with VROC/GPL, there is a 30-day trial but
after that it costs (about $100 I think),

Also, you could make your system safe by making sure
you have no Trojans, no Netbious/File Sharing etc.

Go here : http://grc.com/default.htm for a fuller explanation
and to run some security tests.

I've had no problems with VROC+GPL and ZoneAlarm. You just need to allow
VROC and GPL to connect to internet (and act as a server) and it works
just fine.

The first time I tried it hang up, but then GPL appeared in ZoneAlarm
programs-view and I could grant access for it.

Hi, i got problem earlier with Nascar 3, even if i allow N3 in Zone Alarm,
it was still freezing my system. The problem occuring is that N3 and some
other game want to be on top of the internet activity and if you have Zone
Alarm set also to be on top on the internet activity as well, you just
have cause the freezing problem.

So i have remove the check in the option box (On top during internet
activity) of Zone Alarm and everything is fine now. But you must still
configure N3 first, manually. You can fine the option under configure
menu.

I used ZoneAlarm and VROC/GPL for months and then I installed a
Voodoo2, from that point on (even after the voodoo2 left) I could not
use the two togather. I went into ZoneAlarm and told it GPL/VROC had
all rights to the internet. The problem is not connecting, it is after
you have done a few laps and hit ESC to exit the practice or race,
that is when it would lock solid. I have since removed ZoneAlarm and I
am now using a Linksys Router.

I use Tiny personal Firewall.

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

It's a bit "***" but very configurable. No problems with GPL/WinVROC.

ZoneAlarm and VROC

I have just made GPL+VROC+ZA working. Though there are
few traps I've skillfully found (by stepping in them:>):

Trap #1: When GPL tries to connect outside first time,
ZA pops-up a message box, but the screen is in exclusive
use, so everything is frozen (I guess ZA waits for answer
and GPL waits for connection). I've solved it by
temporary switching GPL to software mode and disabling
full screen:
[ Rasterizer ]
fullScreen = 0
Then connect, this time ZA is able to pop-up their message,
confirm connection and set it to remember the answer.
Now you can go back to 3D in GPL.

Trap #2. You need to have "On to during internet activity"
disabled in ZA, otherwise similar problem as in trap #1.

Trap #3. Uncheck "show alert popup window" in ZA, otherwise
everything get frozen when some alert will be produced.

Trap #4. Automatic lock in ZA need to be disabled.
(This one is my guess:>)

Trap #5. Make sure that you don't have any other program
running in background that could make ZA ask you to
confirm connection. So you need to set 'remember' option
for this kind of programs (whether the answer is 'yes' or 'no').

Alex.

At the intermediate or high security level, ZA is guaranteed to give you
grief.  I've had some luck running it at the lowest level.  Be sure to
turn off logging and the like.

Blackice worked great for me, so long as you disable the trace-back,
logging, etc. stuff.  Trouble is that it isn't a freebie...  Still worth
it, IMO.  I can even host with BlackIce in the background - no apparent
problems.

Haven't tried anything else....

Another option is to disable all the network services that may be bound
to your Network adaptor.  This leaves your system fairly safe, although
I'm sure Bill left a 'few' backdoors and loopholes open....

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/securnet.htm#Not
http://www.dslreports.com/ also has lots of good info.

I did post a 4 page article about firewalls and running sims, you may find
some info there...I noticed no one mentioned
that, so I'm going to guess no one saw it.  It's at The Pits in the hardware
section...

Do NOT use Lockdown 2000, there's a long story that goes with it, but
suffice it to say, it's not even worth your
time as a firewall...

Cheers!

I use an early version of Guard Dog, by ***Media.  It works fine with GPL
and VROC, and seems to be effective, per the security tests at the site
listed below.  One caveat:  Only use Version 1.x  (I got it at a local
computer show for $10).  Later versions have a lot of other useless
features that have locked up my system.

Can't get this to work. GPL is set to software mode. BTW to do that you edit
that in the app.ini file and change Last Used Rasterizer to softdll.dll.
Also in core.ini do the fullscreen=0 change. Anyway I tried VROC and the ZA
message box would not pop up. Then used Alt-Tab and screen would not change.
My question is, should all the 5 steps below be  done before trying VROC? Or
should the 5 steps be done  in sequence. Example... do Trap #1, start VROC,
and then try to get the ZA pop up message. If that's right then I should see
the ZA pop up when I Alt-Tab. But I don't.
That's where things are. If no changes suggested then the solution doesn't
work for me.

ZoneAlarm and VROC

by Ale » Tue, 23 Jan 2001 09:01:40

I encountered these problems while trying to make VROC work,
but I guess #2-5 can be done before VROC. Conecrinng #1
I set software mode, and fullscreen=0 then went into
multiplayer mode and tried to host the race (without VROC).
ZA pop-up appeared and I answered yes and remember the answer.
(I didn't need alt-tab)
