GPL, WinVROC, ZoneAlarm and SOCKS

by Arto Wik » Mon, 05 Feb 2001 23:41:16

I have installed WinVROC 2.1 with the fix. I changed the
core setting:

[ Communications ]
disable_modem = 1   ; 0 = Modem enabled *  1 = Modem disabled
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
         ; 0 = No alternate lookup *  1 = Use alternate way

I gave the "server" licence to WinVROC when ZoneAlarm
asked for it. The program starts and I can follow some
strange :) conversation. And I seem to be able also to
write there. After a while the program informs that it
is not able to contact VROC and that portion of WROC is
disabled. I guess the reason is "Incorrect Proxy Settings"?
Where can I find my system's SOCKS settings to be able
to tell them to WinVROC?

And by the way - a stupid question? - do I have to have
WinVROC running when I start GPL in Multiplayer? How does
GPL know to use WinVROC?

A new try, ..., perhaps I must give more info to get some
advice? Someone told this has been discussed earlier, but
I could not find that with DejaNews...

More info: I am using a cable modem. And just now when I once
again tried to start WinVROC, ZoneAlarm tolds me:

"The firewall has blocked Internet access to your computer
  (TCP Port 1080) from irc.shadowworld.net (195.31.138.68)
  (TCP Port 25682)."

I guess icr.shadowworld.net has something to do with VROC? At least
I've seen similiar notices also earlier, just before WinVROC gives its
own message of not being able to connect. The name ShadowWorld just
doesn't sound very thustworthy... ;)

How to keep the firewall, and let just VROC connect? And are there
other ways than VROC for connecting to on-line GPL races?

Is it possible to connect just from the GPL own Multiplayer page?

Arto

PS By the way, how do you connect to N4 races?

Hi Arto,

For the time being, we use http://www.internetracefinder.com utility for
Nascar Heat and N4 Demo races.

Jason.

I myself couldn't find a way to make ZoneAlarm and VROC co-operate.
Actually ZoneAlarm eventually managed to get my entire windows
networking go haywire so I had to boot it. I really don't know
if it was the new version of ZoneAlarm that introduced the bugs
or what, but it just wouldn't work anymore.

All this in Windows 2000 prof.

When joining a race in VROC it automatically launches GPL with
the proper settings. There should be no need for you to launch
GPL manually.
