As a follow up to my own post, I suppose the Bill James himself isn't
even the one who "invented" it. He is just the biggest "name"
associated with it.

When you say that, do you mean there hasn't been any signs of warping,
or when warps or delays in data transmission has occurred the netcode
has been able to deal with it.

Logically, it shouldn't be too difficult to deal with a brief loss in
communication with the server as far as the server software been able to
realise that that would be what has just happened - if the server
queries the player's position and no reply comes back then the server
must assume a connection problem whilst guessing at player's location on
the track.  If player then re-appears at different position then don't
punish player for this as it was a connection issue.

As an addition to this, do you know where players have been connecting
from, so far.  Have there been players from all over the globe, or just
the USA?

Not Larry, but no, no flags or pitstops implemented yet.

Earlier on (about last year) iRacing held some fun races with 40+
drivers which seemed to work out fine, in the current format the
maximum number of racers is limited to 12-14 I believe, depending on
the series and kind of track being run (roadie or oval). A larger
field will automatically be split on to several race servers (say you
have 16 peeps registered for a 12 max race, you'll end up on a server
with 8 racers each).

Cheers, uwe

Thanks.  And smaller fields based on your previous posts I see as well.

Again I think I will take a wait and see approach, seems to be a lot missing
from what other sims offer, some things added, some things removed or not
implemented yet.  Kind of feels like the next phase is a paid beta until
they get things a bit more finished.

Heck...I hate to have to answer my own question.... but it seems like no-one
else will !?!
Strange me thinks

-Larry <<

Nice "cover answer" Larry, but is that it?
Can you or anyone actually answer the other questions posted here?

Of course in the same way, iRacing "hasn't really been a concern for me
either" as I haven't and probably won't pay for it.

I'm also a bit appalled with the "marketing strategy"  er, um, I mean
"special offers"  (do I have 10 yet?) that are being paraded around and
MASCARADED as it they are actually some sort of "special offer".

~allowing me to join and pay~  is  NOT a "special offer".

A FREE TRIAL - well that might be a special offer.  2 for 1 - I think that
is a special offer...
but sign up now and pay forever.... so that someone else can pay later (get
everything up to that point for the entrance fee) and then pay forever?
Seems a little inequitable to me.
Or will people that join in say a year from now... will they have to pay
$500+ "initiation" to get the updates and features that are available at
that time?

Personally, I smell a bad concepted business model and a WORSE smelling
marketing "special offer" campaign.

Excuse me.... the stink makes me want to leave the forum for a moment.

Sheesh

Bill James coined the term sabermetrics.  It's named as a tribute to
the SABR organization, which is was (and I assume is) a part of.

Thank You Uwe

Frankly, disappointing numbers to be honest.

I'm afraid it's more complicated than that, but when the beta started we had
close to 100 online at one time.

Bear in mind, those signed into the race were broken up into like skill
levels on their own servers.  I believe we had around 20 in mine.

Like I said, it's more complicated than your question :)

It's not due to bandwidth. It's due to racers being grouped into like skill
level's.

The system is far more complicated than a single question like "How many can
race at once"

Boy, you really seem to be mis-reading things.  I know nothing about special
offers.  There is no break if you get an invite.  You are simply being
afforded the opportunity to be one of the early signers.  Nothing more,
nothing less.

If you want one, fine.  If not, that's fine too.

No one is masquarading anything around here.

As far as the warp, what I said is what I mean.  Since a certain period in
the beta, I have witness zero warp issues.  Some may have, I'm just
indicating what _I_ have witnessed.

Really man, you can take off your tin hat.  There is no *** there.

That is correct.  Yellows and pitting have not been implemented yet.
iRacing is a growing animal that will probably never really be 'finished' :)

Just to re-iterate, field size is not a simple thing to figure out.

It is based on driver skill levels and the number of people signed up for a
race.

I have been in races with upwards of 20 people and have had no issues.
