What drivers for GPL & Voodoo 5

What drivers for GPL & Voodoo 5

by Ian Riche » Sat, 05 Jan 2002 18:44:59

I'll be installing a V5 tonight to replace my TNT2.

Since the demise of 3dfx there now seem to be as many "3rd party"
driver variants as there are unofficial Nvidia releases, which is
confusing to say the least!

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which drivers to use?  GPL
is fired up more often than anything else on my PC, and so is my main
focus, but compatibility with NFS:PU, Toca2, Rally Championship 2000,
FUIII and Flanker 2.0 / 2.5 would be nice as well........

any difference.  Mobo is Via KT133A-based.

I understand that it is best to run GPL in D3D rathern than glide to
preserve all the nice 16-bit textures, hi-res dashes etc. that I have
got used to with the TNT2.  Is that correct?   Also, with the above
system, do I have a chance of  1024x768 with 4x FSAA?

Thanks!

Ian

Just install the last certified drivers still possible to get from
www.3dfx.com. Works like a charm on anything.

No you don't :) Even on my amd xp1600 I couldn't get it to run
properly with 4x FSAA.

btw, where do you get the 16-bit textures ?

No worries

Thanks for that.  I'll start there, and try and resist the temptation
to fiddle if everything works ;-)

Oh well.  It'll still be a big improvment at 2x,  I hope.

I'm using the last 3dfx drivers 1.04's Nov 2000. Try www.ammoburners.com,
www.omegacorner.com for other drivers. There are other sites out there. I
don't see any big difference with all this driver swapping.

I run GPL at 1280x1024 2xfsaa, in glide, JFCarset, 50% detail on most
tracks. Sometimes reduce to 1024x768 depending on track eg Leipzig.

My V5 is overclocked to 188MHz with extra heatsink/fans.

What drivers for GPL & Voodoo 5

I had this gpl machine built around a year and a half ago. At the time the
V5 was coming out and people were having trouble getting gpl to work
together with fsaa. Lockups, etc.

I never had one problem. worked like a charm.

Along the way I purchased a GF3 card and put it in my box.  Recently I
cleaned out all the nvidia drivers and put back in my V5. Since then fsaa
lo9cks up in glide??? What could have happened and how should I fix this?

Sincerely...

Dave C.

I disagree with you about not wanting to run GPL in Glide with a V5.  If
for no other reason than you can use the "Glide Wrapper" to place your
mirror at a center position, ala a rearview mirror.  AFAIK, you can't do
anything similar in D3D.  Sorry, but I don't have the link for the Glide
Wrapper -- Can anyone help here?

The original drivers that shipped with the card would not work with 2xfsaa
on most systems.  Since nobody had enough horsepower to run 4xfsaa that was
a problem.  Just about any driver after Nov. 2000 should work fine with GPL
and a V5.    I've been running d3d and using many of the upgraded textures
that are available now...The Ring is stunning...
