IDEA FOR A NEW SIM

by Sébastien Tixie » Fri, 19 Jan 2001 16:17:45

Hi all !

Yesterday when ordering my stuffs, i found again my old PC ( Amstrad PC
1512 ), and the games that i had with it... and particulary one :

4D Sports Driving.

For the people who don't know the game, it was  "sim" ( mean that  you
had to brake to take turns and was in 3D ).It was like the arcarde game
Hard Drivin' or PC game Stunt Driver (  i don't mean Stunt Racer - on
amiga - )  .
In the tracks there were stunts as looping, corscrew ( big pipe were you
had to pass on roof of pipe to go through it ), banked jump, banked
turns, bridges, spiral ramp, etc...

Well, i imagine a game like this, with GPL car physics, and today 3D
graphics. WAOW !

Could be very fun AND interesting to drive, go through the banked jump
at the right speed to land right on the other side of the banked jump,
not too far because you'll crash on the road ( too much vertical speed)
and not to short .

And as the original 4D sport driving, it would have a track editor !

....

well, i think, i found an idea of game for my spare time :o)

what do you think about this ?

There's a list of sites that carry various abandonware titles at
http://www.abandongames.com.  4D Sports Driving is definitely listed
here.  This site is a good one to bookmark as well.

Have fun.

Stunt Driver!  I still have that somewhere.  It was soo cool back then,
the car would lean when taking a corner and the shaker hood scoop would
really shake!

And there was null-modem support , but with  bugs, because after a few
minutes, the 2 PCs was de-synchronised and only 1 PC could see both cars !

and Stunt Driver had some cool stunts that 4d had not , like Corscrew jump,
2 mid corscrew and a river beetween them, you'll have to land on the other
side of the corscrew with the car upside down ... thrill !! :o)

Moving bridge ... like those on Midtown madness.

and more ....

"Izzy..." a crit :

Hm, yes, one of my first side-programs with the Racer engine would be
a revision of Stunt Car Racer. Currently though it has the problem
that GPL has with the Pants Ring. However, that is just a question of
having the rays from the wheels take on the car orientation, and than
you can create VRML tracks in which you can drive upside down (I have
another nice idea to test for this; driving a F1 car upside down based
on downforce alone, a fallen 'U' track).
But that's still some time away, first some skiing. But quite fun.

But very difficult probably with GPL physics! Anyway, would be too
nice to skip.

Just use 3D Studio Max.

Cool. :)

Do a websearch for "abandonware".  Have fun ;-)

speaking of these trick type games, have any of you guys played whiplash
and/or know where I could get that game?  I used to have it (came with some
hardware I bought) but I have lost the game.  It was a real fun game with
some decent physics and decent AI to race against.

Whiplash was originally Fatal Racing from the UK.  It was a fun
head-to-head game at the time.  I don't know where to find it (other
than in my closet) but it might give you more options to check.  Wonder
if it's in abandonware sites?

Jason.

First off I gota say idea does appeal to me even though I prefer more realistic
type games (I too feel under the spell of Whiplash though...head-to-head was
REALLY fun in that).

But as far as the abandonware sites go...WOW!!  I remember playing a bunch of
those games on console year ago.  Amazing how many Nintendo and Sega Genesis
titles I recognized going through that list.  Quite impressive these games are
still around (other than at flea markets).
