GPL - PII system w GeForce4 card - 15FPS?

by Racefan_Da » Mon, 01 Dec 2003 00:16:21

I must be doing something wrong because I've just returned to GPL
after a few years off and my framerates are ridiculously low! I'm
getting 15FPS in 640x mode with everything set to minimum! D3D and
OpenGL are equally as awful.

Granted, my system is old - it's a PII-233 w 320MB RAM, but I have a
GeForce4 MX420 64MB card (latest Nvidia drivers). (yeah I know it's
not the best card out there) but it should be more than sufficient to
run at a reasonable framerate on GPL, should it not? What can I do??

I first got GPL when it came out and was running at a smooth 36FPS
with my Rendition-based Diamond Stealth II S220. Then a few years ago
when I upgraded from Win98 to WindowsXP I took that card out and put
in a Voodoo3 3000. However, I could never get GPL running smoothly
(5fps) so left it at that. Something is wrong.. I was thinking XP
might be the culprit - but I can play NFS Porsche Unleashed with max
details at 1024x and it's silky...

I even just did a fresh install of GPL and with nothing put the
Superpatch am getting the disappointing results I mentioned above.
Definitely unplayable. I'm thinking of looking for my trusty old 4MB
Stealth II.....

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Things to check:

If you've installed gpl on an NTFS formatted partition, go to the gpl
folder properties, advanced, and allow indexing on this folder.

Make sure you are not running in software mode, although tbh you should be
getting a decent framerate with your PC anyway ;-)

If you have installed any addon graphics, try running with a standard
install to see if that's the problem. I'm guessing you've already tried
this though.

If you were only getting 5fps or whatever with a V3 I would guess there's
something hogging your system. With a standard install on a P200/V2 I can
get 25fps in training mode. Try disabling your virus scanner, that's a
common culprit.

You're right about the 420, it really should be capable of running a
standard gpl install in D3D or OpenGL perfectly well. Do you get problems
with any other games/sims?
