LFS and LWFF wheel

by Darf » Tue, 03 Sep 2002 09:28:21

After all the patches from the LFS guys, my LWFF wheel  (the original red
one) is still not working properly.
I can't seem to get dual axis for the brake throttle, and LFS still can't
see buttons 5 and 6.
I have got the wheel setup using the usb adapter that came with the wheel.
Running XP Using the LFS Q patch.
When using single axis for Brake/Throttle, if you are using partial throttle
on cornering, does application of the brake effectively just reduce the
throttle setting, and will not apply brake and throttle at the same time?
This is what I have assumed happens
I assume that to trail brake properly, it must be setup as dual axis.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Has anyone else got this wheel to work properly?

The best I can do with the LWFF and LFS is either go with the 'L' release
(which it appears is no longer downloadable) or go with the 'Q' version. The
'L' gives you decent FF but no split axis or fixes. The 'Q' version is setup
using the Momo recommended configuration. With this setup (with force type
1) you still have the pull to the left. If you choose force type 2 the dual
axis works and you loose the pull to the left along with all FF effects. For
me LFS felt better before the patches.

To get split-axis on the LWFF, here are the settings:

Throttle - Axis RZ
Brake = Axis Z
Swap Pedals ENABLED

I agree that the FF still doesn't work right.  The best is setting 1 which pulls
to the left.  I just set the FF strength to zero and go from there....

I tried your suggestions, but when I go to race, the throttle just revs
almost flat out and everything is not well. Have Downloaded the latest
Wingman software.
Is your wheel the original Logitech red with the soft grip and the bid
paddles?
Do you use the USB adapter or the serial adapter?
Has anyone else got the LWFF wheel to work ok with dual axis?

Get the clear calibration utility at the wingman site(team wingman site
that is)  use that and then reboot and reload your wheel.
  Good luck.

Hi Darf. Excellent LFS racing last night mate :).

Yep you got it - without split/dual axis you can't trail brake. The brake
will just reduce the throttle.

I still can't quite get all the buttons on my Guillemot Ferrari FF wheel
(USB) to recognise (with the Q patch). I get the paddles(1,2), main wheel
buttons(3,4), gear lever(5,6), 2 of the 4 d-pad buttons(7,8 - 9,10 won't
register), and the hat switch doesn't register at all.

The force feedback works nicely though and I have no probs with split axis.
Not much help I know.

Krunch.

It was very close racing wasn't it? I Need both sides of the Turbo repainted
:-)
Thanks for your reply,
Now I have another question re GPL, I will post it as a new thread under:
GPL and Dual axis

Hmm.... Did you make sure that no other controllers are active?  ....and that
Swap Pedals is enabled?

FWIW -- I use Win 98SE and the Wingman software is 3.62.127 (not the latest).
However, I DON'T launch LFS (or any other sim for that matter) through the
Profiler.  (maybe you can try launching without the Profiler active?)  I use the
USB adaptor, and it is the original LWFF with the red soft grip and the large
paddle shifters.

One last thought -- Do you have the patch installed that enables split-axis? --
can'tremember which one it was.  (Probably a Dumb Question, I know, but I can't
think of anything else to check....)

The patch I'm waiting for is the one that will enable multiple controllers, as I
hate those LWFF pedals.......

Good Luck.

By George I got it !!!!
I tried your suggestions to no avail :-(
Then I went into control Panel \ Game Controllers \ Logitech Wheel \
Properties and in there it let me deselect the box that selects single axis
for Throttle and Brake....now LFS works.....Dual Axis!!!!
I then Tried GPL....and I recalibrated the wheel within GPL, selected the
new axis in controls and Bingo.....I am a Trail Braker !!!!
Look out 104's at the Glen :-)
Hope this helps others that have had troubles.
Thanks to all that posted with help :-)

Now that you've got dual axis sorted I may not be able to catch you - I'd
better get practicing  :-).

Well, I have been using single axis throttle / brake since F1GP was
released. Now I have to learn to drive all over again.
I don't think you will have any trouble catching me in the immediate future.
So far it has only taken .34 of a second off my time at the Glen.
So much for the 2 seconds that I thought would have peeled off my lap times
using dual axis :-)
Trail Braking definitely helps a bit on LFS, especially the hairpin before
the chicane.
Catch you soon for another LFS Session.
