Help, I just got a new machine (Dell 4100, PIII 1 GHz, 128 MB, 16 MB ATI
Rage Pro, Windows ME), and it is having trouble with GPL.  The program
crashes - it quickly flickers out, and then I am returned to the desktop.
There doesn't seem to be much of pattern to the problem, although it seems
most likely to happen as I'm pulling out of the pits and on to the track.
Sometimes I can drive for 15 to 20 minutes before it crashes.  Changing
graphics detail settings doesn't seem to make any difference.  Any ideas?
Could the graphics card be the source of the problem?  Win ME?  Also, I
installed the Papyrus 1.2 patch, didn't seem to make any difference.

What kind of soundcard do you have?  I have a Montego II, which requires
disabling the a3d sound acceleration to get GPL (and alot of other games) to
work.

Are you running ZoneAlarm? This problem is common in on-line racing if
ZoneAlarm is running. Offline ZA is fine though.

Martin-

My brother got a new Dell last year [PIII 700, 128 RAM] and my first
gift to him was GPL and we have had the exact same problem.  Also
installed the 1.2 patch.  The solution from Sierra, also posted in
another reply to you, had to do with the sound drivers used by Dell.  

It seemed to fix the problem for a while, we jumped from track to track
and had some fun, but on lap 2 at Spa it came back and the "crash to
desktop" continued everytime after that, usually during the first lap
of whatever track we picked.  We love the game and would like to solve
the problem so we could actually get better at it, as I am sure you
would as well.

If this helps at all, here is the official response from Dell we got.

Looks like a classic game, as is stated in this ng all the time.

Summary:  Grand Prix Legends Crashes
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:
This is due to an issue with the
older Aureal reference drivers on which Dell's Turtle Beach Montego
2 drivers are based. It does not only affect Grand Prix Legends, but
also quite a few other games that use Direct Sound. If they follow
the pattern of Aureal's reference drivers it should be fixed with
their next driver update. In the meantime, you should be able to
solve the problem in the following fashion:
1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Double-click the TBS Montego 2 Audio icon, then click the
Settings tab.
3. Check the box marked "Disable Direct Sound Hardware
Acceleration."
4. Click Close then start Grand Prix Legends.

You should be able to run the program as intended. If you find
yourself having audio problems with other software as a result of
this, simply uncheck the "Disable Direct Sound Hardware
Acceleration." box, then check it the next time you want to run
Grand Prix Legends.
