Will realistic Force Feedback ever arrive??

Does anyone know of any developments of a FFB device that would be up
to Papyrus's standards? What is holding FFB from becoming efficient
enough to handle mimicking a steering wheel as realisticlly as
possible? Is it the interface to the wheel? Is it the wheels
themselves? Are any of the top quality wheel manufactures making a
better FFB wheel or are we gonna have to weight till a superfast way
of comunicating with the pc arrives?

Yep.  Ability to code it. Nope.  Nope.  Dunno.

With Viper Racing, the gents at MGI have proven that it can be done,
it can be done now, and it can be done well.

I have never tried Viper racing with a FFB wheel.Does it go light as
you lose grip at the fronts.Does it go light as the rear steps
out.Does it go light as you crest hills signalling less weight on the
front tires.Does it pull to one side if you lock a wheel under
braking.Does it give a see-saw effect if your fishtailing.Sorry about
all the DOES IT questions:)))

Brett...

You know I'm using a MS FF wheel and I thought the FF in Toca 2 was markedly
better than Viper Racing. I found the feeling of loss of traction in those
FWD BTCC cars to be both pronounced and progressive. Have you tried it?
Whadya think?

Hi Skeeter,

Yes, to all, but one.

The steering gets "muddy" when you lock up under braking, but it
doesn't pull to one side.  This feels accurate to me.

No need at all to be sorry. ;)

Hi Jack,

I don't know, I honestly didn't put enough time into TOCA2 to really
dissect the FF, but from my experience, the FF in Viper Racing felt
more "real" -- I only say that because TOCA2 came off my drive
relatively quickly.  If the FF would have blown me away, like Viper
did, TOCA2 would have stayed on my drive for that reason alone,
regardless of what I thought of its physics model.

Also, to me, FWD just isn't as exciting as RWD.  In real life, for
pure *fun*, I'd much rather have RWD.  I'm sure that's a bias towards
Viper's FF right off the bat...

I just haven't felt anything like Viper yet, especially the way I can
*really* feel the car pitch. I grew up pushing cars harder off road
than I would on the street, but the feel still applies.  Simply put,
the FF in Viper feels good enough to feel familiar, so I know they did
something right.

What's exciting to me, is that -- as good as you think TOCA2 is, and
as good as I think Viper is -- these are only some of the FIRST ones
to support FF, in a correct manner.  What's next?!

Thanks guys for the responses.Sounds like Viper FFB is pretty good
and I would love for GPL to get a FFB patch.Would be awesome if GPL's
upcoming patch has FFB in it.Could this be whats taken so long???Gotta
wait and see.
As for Hyperstimulator developing a new standard with guys from
papy,we'll just have to wait and see.Remember the rumor of TSW and
Papy supposedlly creating an H-shifter together for GPL.We can hope
though:)

I got this information from the official Dutch hyperstim dealer. They
expected it to arrive late this year, but that remains to be seen. It
will also be available as an upgrade for the current Hyperstims. No
price indication was given, but I expect it won't be cheap.

I HIGHLY doubt this.  There is absolutely no reason for Papyrus to do this
at all.  I-Force has been around quite awhile and has been used in many
non-game situations.  DirectX's implementation isn't that bad for ***.  I
haven't seen Papyrus developing a new standard for 3D...:)

Then I wish Papy "Good Luck", as they'll need it. If they really think
they could introduce a NEW standard, I'd be surprised. They just don't
sell enough to do that. They better get a grip on the current FF as
done by MGI in VR...
