N4 Annoyances...the 5 minute test

by Marc Collin » Sun, 11 Feb 2001 14:06:49

I told the NH guys that nothing is more annoying than finding glitches or
bugs within 5 minutes of running the game.  Well, after a 2 hour
installation procedure due to the security BS on the CD-ROM, I launched N4.

Two immediate problems: there are no yellows during practise...and that
seems to mean that the AI drive as though slower or disabled vehicles don't
exist.  Ramming time...about the same degree of stupidity as the AI on pit
lane in NH.  A ridiculous number of incidents while running practise...most
of which turn into catastrophes because the rest of the field just piles in
without even attempting to brake.

The second is just silly: when you visit a track that has a smaller field,
the field size remains at the reduced number even when you go back to a
track that permits more.  There should be an obvious option or default to
maximum field size for those who prefer that.

"Damping" in the FFB set-up...where is the explanation of what this does and
how to set it?  I hope it won't take a year to figure out the best way to
adjust FFB like it did with GPL.

What the hell is with the wheel flailing around when you rev up the engine
in neutral??  Is someone suggesting the front wheels are actually turning
like that????  A bit of rocking from the engine torque would be sufficient.

Lastly, the damage is quite relaxed--even on "Realistic."  You can get
slammed into by someone running at full speed and still drive away with just
localised damage.  So far, there are several ways N4 is actually worse than
N3.  Fortunately, the whole GPL base for the game works well, as expected.

Marc.

On Sat, 10 Feb 2001 05:06:49 GMT, "Marc Collins"
Last night I ran a 25-lap race at California with no incidents at all
during the actual race, but on the cool-down lap, half the field piled
up in the fourth turn trying to enter the pits.

And trying to go three-wide is suicide.  You get pinballed every time.

Are you going to return it? If your answer is no then you really can't ***
cause you are going to keep it anyway. Oh, and yellows in
practice??????????? HUH???????

Whether I return it or not has no bearing whatsoever on whether I post an
opinion here...or what that opinion may be.

Yellows in practise...yes.  Do you think that it is just a free for all in
the real NASCAR practise sessions?  The point was that the AI's sense of
what is around them seems to be triggered by the yellow flag because during
a race, under a yellow flag situation, they act reasonably.  During practise
mode, under what would be a yellow flag situation if there were yellow
flags, the AI drive like suicidal, homicidal maniacs.

Running a testing session would alleviate your problems. Then it would just
be you on the track.

N4 Annoyances...the 5 minute test

by Cliff Roma » Wed, 14 Feb 2001 07:19:33

In a way I would agree, but think about how it would work.

When there is a "Yellow" during a real WC Practice, they basically all go
into the pit and sit there until the mess is cleaned up.

I do not know about you, but if I am practicing with the AI, the last thing
I want to do is go sit in the pit for 5 min while the game simulates
cleaning up the mess

There is NO pace car on yellows during practice

N4 Annoyances...the 5 minute test

Yuck, I would not like having yellows in the practice session. Heck, I don't
spend that much time in the practice session anyways.

N4 Annoyances...the 5 minute test

by Vintoo » Thu, 15 Feb 2001 00:44:24

Nice to know I'm a reliable source. Yellows during practice in the GAME is
absurd. We are talking about the GAME. Why the hell would you want to drive
around the track doing 60 during a practice session or even go sit in the
pits like the real drivers? With the ability to go to a training session
with NO AI cars there is absolutely NO reason to have yellows in the
practice. Although the main reason is that it would be awfully boring and
the only practice you would be getting was driving under yellow. WOW! What
fun that would be! HEY MOM! I PAID $50 to drive around a track at 60 MPH
during a practice session! Isn't that great!
